Well, we were in Mr. Swab's biology class, and he came in on September 11th and said, "You guys all need to go home and watch the news." And so I went home, and then I saw obviously what we all saw live on TV, and it really had an impact on me for some reason.

I guess I just felt the call to service, and that night I put in my application to join the military, and then finished that year of university, and that summer I was in basic training.

And I have some extended family that have served, but no one in my immediate family has, so I was- Completely naive to what that actually meant.

I thought that everybody was infantry soldiers and everybody went over-- we were gonna go overseas right away.

And why did you choose to work in those northern remote communities?
