Les Abend

15:43
I mean, certainly you've seen, you've seen that in your career as well.
15:46
Well, we, we talked about it as a check airman.
15:49
You know, my two favorite stories was one, well, for the most part, was, uh, as a segment six, 767 check airman, a lot of times I would get captains that came off the Super 80.
15:59
So that thing on the ground is like a go-kart, you know, versus the 767.
16:03
There's a different sight picture for landing.
16:05
And you know, it was always, like you said, in the back of a glider, "When do I intervene?" And it-- you just knew inevitably that at some point, that, that particular, uh, initial operating experienced student was gonna basically fly the, the thing right into the concrete.
16:21
But how far do you let that happen? You know, do you just make it embarrassing? Is it going to be a point where, you know, the wheels are gonna come off the bus? People are gonna be scared.

15 MINS LATER

31:15
I think, I think the technology's getting there.

You fly a Piper Arrow now, and you look at a guy like Les Abend, you say, "Well, there's a guy that's gonna take off in any kind of weather." Not so, right?
5:17
No, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm scared.
5:19
[laughs] You know, uh, it, it, it, and, and it's, and it's good to be scared.
5:25
Um, you, you, you, you mitigate your risks like, like we all know, but, um, you know, I would, I would just as soon stay on the ground, um, you know, rather than, than get up in the air if I see something that's questionable.
5:39
And one of my favorite co-pilots is my wife, and my favorite passenger, and there's nothing I would do to, uh, to make her uncomfortable or, or, or scared.
5:50
Yeah.
5:51
Uh, the Cherokee Six was really my first airplane when [laughs] I finally convinced my wife to, to, to, to, uh, to, to purchase.

7:59
So then you went into something very different.
22:17
But based on what you've seen, have you drawn any conclusions about what caused this accident?
22:25
Well, I have, Kayla, to some extent.
22:28
Maybe I give you a little better perspective on what pilots would have been thinking just prior to this landing.
22:33
I would have known that this wind was gusty.
22:37
We would have added a factor we call gust factor to it.
22:40
Hopefully, that's what they did.
22:42
It's an easy mathematical formula that just adds gusts.
24:26
How are these planes built to withstand something like this, and how remarkable is it that it held up?
