Well, in the early part of the 21st century, Britain was regarded as having a flexible labour market.

This was the term which was frequently used.

And the comparison was usually with the continental European countries who had a lot more regulation than we did.

I mean, under Mrs. Thatcher and John Major, we had deregulated the labor markets in many ways.

We got rid of the wages councils.

We'd taken away the powers of trade unions to cause strikes at a moment's notice.
