This is really an incredible story.

What I do as the sports time traveler is I pick an event back in time, and then I pretend to go back in time through the newspaper archives and actually relive day by day the event.

by reading all the different newspaper accounts of it.

And I couldn't wait to do this for the 1966 US Open.

So back in June, when we hit the 60-year anniversary, I started reading the newspapers about a week before.

And nobody knows who Woody

So what were those, and can you give some description of them?

So, so one thing happened that everybody knew was going to happen.

It was a very historic moment.

Lee Elder became the first Black player ever to play in the Masters.

Uh, you know, it's hard to fathom now, but, uh, prior to the early 1970s, uh, uh, Black players were excluded from playing in the Masters, even if they were qualified, and then Augusta National passed a new, uh, rule, I guess, uh, saying that if anybody who won a PGA Tour event in the 12 months before the Masters, uh, regardless of the color of their skin, was qualified to play, and Lee Elder had actually won the Monsanto Open, uh, in April of 1974.

So he knew for the almost the whole next year that he was going to be teeing it up in the Masters, and when he did tee it up, that was a very historic moment.

So, but the other thing that happened is something nobody knew about at the time, but, uh, and I've kind of uncovered this.
