When his friend became manager, Lee found an inspiring leader who built confidence.
87:10
If you're out there and you make an error or something, it's not where he's going to jump on you or something.
87:14
He's not even going to talk to you that day.
87:15
He'll bring you in the next day.
87:16
He won't talk about it.
87:18
And I feel like guys play, when they're out there, just play at ease.
87:21
You know, they just go out there and do what they have to do.
88:03
You know, at first, at the beginning of the year,
3:19
He took you all over the place.
3:20
Yeah, you kind of did your homework, yeah.
3:22
Because, you know, he did that, and his family did it in the 40s.
3:27
You know, something that we did during the winter and played, obviously, baseball in the summertime.
3:35
But I got to play a lot.
3:37
I mean, skate a lot.
3:40
And I had the opportunity to try out for the 72 Olympics, which was in Sapporo, Japan.
8:24
Were you ready to go to pro ball? Did you want to go to college? What did your parents say?
3:35
He took you all over the place.
3:36
Yeah, you kind of did your homework.
3:38
Yeah.
3:39
He did that and his family did it in the 40s.
3:42
And, you know, something that we did during the winter and played, obviously, baseball in the summertime.
3:51
But I got to play a lot.
3:53
I mean, skate a lot.
8:40
Were you ready to go to pro ball? Did you want to go to college? What did your parents say?
6:11
Mm-hmm.
6:11
They came to play.
6:13
And when I was in the, in the clubhouse and just seeing how they went about their business and, and talking about the game and just, it was, um, that's something that, uh, y- y- it, it just never goes away, you know, being, being in, in, in, in that dugout.
6:31
And then, and then just not recently, not too long ago I, I saw an old, uh, tape of the game and, and there I was coming into the dugout, and there's Pete Rose hugging me, and Davey Lopes, God rest his soul, and LeSlaughter.
6:47
I mean, Schmi- that's just like, it's crazy, man.
6:50
These are all Hall of Famers.
6:51
These are greats.
10:48
... base.
17:46
Well, you know, at that time when
17:47
I got released from the Pirates, I had like maybe a week.
17:54
And Bobby and I had the same agent at the time.
17:57
And Tony Antonazio, may he rest in peace.
18:01
And I had two deals out on the table.
18:04
I had deals with two American clubs with like a two-year extension deal.
18:11
And that was being offered to me.
22:48
Why don't you talk about how it's going to be happy and kind of sad remembering those two guys.
9:52
a boxer, right, Lee?
9:52
Yeah, he was a boxer.
9:55
And the only thing that he did... was support me, no matter what.
10:06
And he embraced me, he supported me, he was there every game, no matter where I played, in the parade grounds, Prospect Park, Marine Park, all the fields in Brooklyn.
10:19
And every time, and every game I went to, I mean, I played and he was there.
10:25
Like I said, he never, ever, my entire career, said, hey, how come you struck out on that pitch? Or how come you made an error? Never, not once.
10:37
And that was an amazing thing.
