Was there something about this story specifically that really grabbed you?

Yeah, I think a few things.

So for all of the work that I have done in the podcast space, I'm really looking for something that's meaty, that has a lot of different rabbit holes you can kind of fall down.

But I'm especially interested in stories where there's a lot of public records.

I'm a dork about public records.

So in this regard, with Hush and with a previous podcast that I did a few years ago that people might know about called Bundyville, I worked with my producer and reporting partner, Ryan Haas.

And so basically, to answer your question with this, Ryan was on vacation and he was expecting to come back and know what Hush Season 2 was.

That's journalist and author Leah Sottile, whose book Blazing Eye Sees All, takes a magnifying glass to American New Age culture, its history, and the impact of modern leaders like Amy Carlson.

As her story goes forward in time, she has her first child when she's pretty young, y- you know, 18 or 19 years old, and the relationship doesn't really work out.

She's not a very welcoming mother in that motherhood doesn't really fit her.

Um, her son Cole, w- who is her oldest child, just remembers her being very distant, be- crying a lot, not really wanting to have a lot to do with him.

And even Amy's own mother Linda h- told me, you know, she didn't take to motherhood right away.

At a certain point after Amy's had two more children with two other men, one of which she marries, th- they have a divorce.

She starts drinking a lot.

He apparently never sees the money again.
