Sure, I've spent too much time on alpha-gal syndrome in three years, so I do know this a little bit better than most.

Leah HamnerGUEST
So there are still many questions about alpha-gal syndrome and how it works in the body and who gets it and who doesn't.

Leah HamnerGUEST
There are plenty of people who get lone star tick bites and do not develop the allergy.

Leah HamnerGUEST
So why that's happening and why other people are developing the allergy is still an active part of science.

Leah HamnerGUEST
But basically what's happening is there's a molecule in a lone star tick bite that looks like a molecule called galactose alpha-1,3-galactose.

So what's going on there? Is it just a lot of medical people aren't familiar with it to give that test?

But that's the sense of where those samples came from and how they were selected.

Leah HamnerGUEST
And it's a fascinating study and very helpful because this background positivity rate, regardless of symptoms, helps us understand when we do the public health surveillance.

Leah HamnerGUEST
We get those positive reports and we actually follow up with those patients to figure out, do you have symptoms or do you not? And so basically we then have a denominator.

Leah HamnerGUEST
And that's what the public health case investigation work is really trying to do.

Leah HamnerGUEST
And so it'll be very interesting to see and compare that seroprevalence data from those states to what they're going to do if they have alpha-gal reportability in those states, kind of how that works out.
