Giving your opinion.
13:29
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:31
You want to talk about it? I do.
13:32
Okay, so this is what I'm trying to get.
13:35
And you will understand this.
13:38
Part of this industry is...
13:41
You have to be talented, and you can be talented, and you can do the best work, but people have to like you.

13 MINS LATER

26:53
How did the things happen for you? How did it just go from a seed to a tree?
6:49
Like, tell us a little bit about how that look came together and where that idea came from.
6:55
I, I give her so much credit because she encourages me to be 100% myself, and also has always pulled me into the narrative, right? And always wanted me to have a personality and a place.
7:13
And she's always had this mindset that as she got big, I would get big with her, because, you know, a lot of my critics are like, "Oh, he think he's the talent," and, "Oh, he thinks he's a star." And every time that you see me on the carpet with her or taking a picture with her, it's that, because she's invited me into that space.
7:31
The interesting part about Met, so it was, the theme that year, of course we all know is, was camp, and I came up with this narrative about, and a story about her being Cinderella because she was right in the point of transitioning from Disney star and she was going into Euphoria, which was a way that the world had never seen her.
7:53
And, um, it was our way of kind of, our last hurrah in a way to being a Disney princess, because I think at that point she was like, in people's eyes at least, she was the reigning Disney princess, and kinda the last of that whole class of the Disney girls.
8:10
And it was a way of showing that, but also saying goodbye to it.
8:15
And because she was going into this new era of playing Rue, her character on Euphoria, and in a way that ain't no one had ever seen Zendaya.

There's a fine line between what is fashion and what is costume, right?
19:32
Of course.
19:32
I see the structure.
19:33
I see all the things that were into the garment, but this is not Project Costume Design, right?
Juju Chang
Juju ChangCORRESPONDENT
19:49
Does that happen this season?
19:51
I think when you have a group of creative people living together 24/7, some of that's bound to happen.
5:03
Mm-hmm
5:03
... we had to, but then it just became a, a thing that, that makes me feel good to, you know, find, nurture, give them, um, opportunities.
5:12
Use, you know, my platform along with Zendaya's platform to kinda, like, elevate people.
5:15
So just seeing it.
5:17
And also, it's, a lot of it is out of selfishness, because I have this Isabella Blow fetish that-

18:49
What was the vibe? What were you going for? Because you said it was more cinematic than even a concert.
18:53
Yeah, I think, um, um, when we got the treatment and started to go into the creative meetings, it was, it was meeting Ariana where she is now.
19:04
And you know, when I, when I think of her, like to me she's, you know, she's past Glinda.
14:35
Why has it been important to you to have that description and have an awareness of that be something that more people now know about?
14:43
Well, when I first started my career, it was in a time, the rise of Instagram and everything, everybody was so multi-hyphenate, right? It was like, oh, stylist, makeup artist, and it was all these things, choreographer and all these things.
15:01
It was so many people that were self-proclaimed stylists.
15:09
I wanted to do something that would set me apart from everyone else, but also when I really thought about the work that I was doing, it was never a thing that I wanted to just put pretty girls in pretty dresses, right? I wanted to be part of the building of their images, right? And so when I thought about that and thought about what I was doing, you know, in my self-reflection, it was, you know, I'm not just choosing a dress.
15:37
Like, I'm really... at the ground level of building someone's image and everything that means.
15:46
When I did the comparison, it really felt like what an architect does for a building or a structure.
15:51
You start out at the foundation, you start out at the dirt, and then you build a blueprint of what these things are going to be and you hire all these contractors for you hire a contractor and they contract in windows and floors and electricity and all that.

What has your relationship been like with her and how has that evolved over the years?

17:49
Mm-hmm.
17:49
Because this world, our world, our industry, is very either you like it or you don't.
17:54
And there's no walking on eggshells or thinking about people's feelings.
17:57
It's, it's just real-world advice, and that's, and I think that's what I bring to the show, because I've been there, I've done that.
18:02
And I've been under the scrutiny and the microscope-

It's all about true love and timing, and the idea of going home.
59:11
And it's so good to see you.
59:13
Vision in all shades of blue-

62:55
I think so.
62:56
Is it strange to see, have, to hear how your books are being, you know, sort of visioned or envisioned for, in real life or on the screen?
28:20
Well worth going up.
28:22
And, mate, I, I've absolutely loved, um, your videos of, you know, just random people stopping to give you, like, water and snacks and stuff.
28:31
Like, it's, it's just so thoughtful just to see how beautiful the community is out there, getting right behind you, and it, it's unreal.
28:38
I love your videos, mate.
28:39
It, it's so good.
28:40
Like, you...
28:42
We're seeing things from your perspective that, I think I wrote to you once that, you know, you're seeing views that a handful of people in Australia have seen.

26:41
What boundaries have you created to make your career more sustainable, if that's the right word, sustainable?
26:47
What I'm doing now is that I have an assistant that stayed with me through everything.
26:53
She really kind of like held me down when my nephew died.
26:56
I became an editor at British Vogue.
27:00
That was fantastic.
27:01
Doing this huge Hollywood piece where we had like 25 shoots and we were shooting all the biggest stars that were in the run.

What did you check off your list? What's still on it?
4:50
Okay, so one thing is I collect Tom Ford Gucci because for me, the 90s and that era is when I was really introduced to luxury, you know, via Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown and everything.
5:04
And so Tom for Gucci was...
5:07
And I'm from Chicago.
5:08
And back then, the Gucci store was this little boutique on 600 North Michigan.
5:14
And I remember just going in there and trying on things.
5:16
And, you know, back then, I don't think that a young black boy was... ever kind of welcomed into these places.
