And is it a, is it a concern that we have declining rates of literacy, and even how people read and what they read and, and even that they may be reading, but they may be reading by scrolling rather than reading a book?
22:16
Yeah, completely.
22:16
And Niamh just mentioned the PISA, uh, results or the assessment program.
22:20
You probably saw in the media recently Ireland still ranking very high on literacy rates, but across the board, the literacy rates have plummeted, gone through the floor, um, is my assessment I think, in terms of the distance between the last 10 years.
22:35
Um, which has been attributed to the longer screen time, increased digitalization, and falling rates of reading for enjoyment.
22:44
And I think that's probably the key point at the end, is that kind of pleasure bases and the growth bases that you would get through reading for enjoyment are now missing in people's lives because of digital engagement.
22:56
Um, I also was interested to look at it from a gender point of view, and we can see again that girls are ranking higher than boys in their literacy.
24:58
And your point about reading for pleasure, reading for fun, how do we, how do, how do we try and encourage and develop that culture, uh, when there are these competing things and that even children that might like books, as soon as there is the, the temptation of a screen or something like that that's, that's more addictive and is affecting their brains in different ways, how do we try and, and combat that?
