Sure.

First off, no, they were not an invention of our lab.

They were a modification of the isolation chip.

So the principle of the original iChip, the isolation chip, was to tackle this conundrum in microbiology, which is We know that of all the microbes that live in the soil, all the different species in taxa, we've been able to cultivate in the lab, grow on a petri dish, a tiny proportion of them.

It's well under 5% that we know are out there.

And to some degree, that makes sense.
