Why challenge this now?

Very simple.

There is, in October, October fifth, twenty twenty-six, will be held the first general provincial election in Quebec since this law was adopted.

So this will be the first time that under this law, politicians elected to the National Assembly will not be taking the oath.

This has grave potential effects.

Because this is a condition to legally sit in the National Assembly, any votes or laws passed in the National Assembly, if they've not been taken by people who took the oath, will not have legal validity.

And this has real consequences for Quebecers.

The federal government hasn't bothered to challenge this law, so why did you feel you should?

So what was originally the reason in the Constitution for pledging allegiance to the king, going back to the beginning?

Yes, so even prior to Confederation, and certainly at Confederation, our Constitution identifies The king as the head of state of Canada, and yes, the head of state of Quebec.

And so it was, and again, as we know, this is a requirement only for people who are elected to a legislative assembly.

The king under our constitution is a part of the legislature, literally has legislative powers in the national assembly itself.

So it would be a strange thing if in the legislative assembly, the king's assembly was the members who are elected there refused to pledge allegiance, refused to pledge their loyalty.

I think so.

It was to ensure that those people in the legislatures are loyal to the Constitution, to the state, to the structure, and to the nature of government that is established in Canada and Quebec.

So what happens next with your lawsuit in Quebec Superior Court?

So what happens next with your lawsuit in Quebec Superior Court?

Are, are there privacy concerns here?

Oh, yeah, definitely.

I think, you know, this is measuring what people are eating, right? And that they, um, might not necessarily ...

It's not like they signed a piece of paper saying that that's what they're, they're doing.

One of the couple of ways that we moderate that, one is that we, we make sure never to sample, um, an area where there are fewer than 500 people so that people can remain anonymous and we're not identifying anyone.

Um, and then second, what we've, uh, done a lot of is tried to talk to people, kind of like we're talking now.

We, we try to be very open about what we're up to, um, so that people, A, know, and B, we try to get as much feedback as we can from the communities near us for how to make this useful to them.

[laughs]

But what was it like in the arena that night? Walk me through the emotions you were going through that night, L.D.,

You know, I'm a half-empty guy.

That glass just never gets filled no matter what I do.

So no matter what it is, I'm thinking that I'm here.

Just from the very fact that I'm there.

Why are they going to make me go home happy? So that's my thinking.

It'll be a miracle if I can go home happy.

I won't be.

(laughs)

Sometimes you get on a movie and they go, "We..." Dana and I talk about this.

You get, you get too locked in the two shot, one shot, pushing, pushing, and you're losing all the momentum and all the fun of it.

And it looks too stiff, back, forth, back.

Sometimes it's nice, those old Woody Allen or whatever, even Tarantino, in a wide shot, just two people talking.

Looks real, you've got to figure out where to look, instead of going, "Look here, look there." We got it.
