For early homesteading families, the water was where community gathered, like for Larry and Grace Bekker, who lived next to the Wood River most of their lives.

My grandfather and grandmother Patons came to the Wood River in 1908.

And that's where my mother was raised, and then when she and I go visit them, days like this, we were in the river from 8:00 until late, 9:00 o'clock at it.

Every farmyard that lived right on the river had their own private swimming hole.

But the Patons' swimming hole became primary.

Now, there are days like this, there's a lot of the Grauberg people would come out and utilize it, which is fine.
