Um, when Nationwide looks at, at property claims across farm and agribusinesses, what are some of those most common risks that you guys are seeing?

Laramie SandquistGUEST
We look at the data, of course, all the time to see, you know, where are we seeing these issues and, and you hit the some of the big ones.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
If you look at the farm space, obviously fire being about 30, 30 to 40% of the claims that come through and, and, uh, wind/severe weather is another 44%, 45%.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
So you look at in farm space, fire and weather account for about 75% of those property claims.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
On the ag side area, the commercial agribusiness side, it's a little lower than that, but you're talking probably 50 to 60% are attributed to weather and fire.

Could you tell us a little bit more about that program and how it can help farmers and agribusiness manage those risks? Um, and then also I'd love if you could just talk about what prompted Nationwide to develop such a program.

I mean, y- why is fall in general a, a good time to just think about some of the risks that are out there in our homes and on our farms and ranches, Laramie?

Laramie SandquistGUEST
Obviously, uh, from an industry standpoint, the NFPA, they s- they, uh, recognize October as the, uh, Fire Prevention Week, this week actually, and then obviously Fire Prevention Month as well, so we all kinda think about it.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
But, uh, as we know, in the, uh, the farm and ag space, whether that's, uh, farmers or ranchers or commercial ag business folks, this is the busiest time of year.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
You know, all the, all the hard work during the summer is, is all coming to fruition, and, uh, we all know everyone's running hot and heavy to get the, get that crop out of the fields, but it's also a good time to remind people of some of the hazards that are out there.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
So we like to talk about, uh, making sure that everyone gets stuff, everything done, uh, you know, as efficiently as possible, but also as safely as possible.

We begin the conversation as Laramie Sandquist shares some background on Nationwide's Let's Champion Rider Safety initiative.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
The initiative, we started this thing off a couple of years back after we started seeing some trends.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
I think we've started seeing trends ever since COVID of the increased usage of these off-road vehicles, whether you call them ATVs or UTVs or off-highway vehicles.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
And of course, with us being one of the larger insurers on the farm and ranch community, we know these are essential to what they do out there.

Laramie SandquistGUEST
but we also know that safety is an important piece to this and of course the manufacturers provide a lot of good safety information but uh there maybe isn't as good a messaging out there sometimes on what are some of the hazards what are some of the risks and what are some of the downfalls of not following the manufacturer recommendations so we really put our foot down probably about two or three years ago and said hey we're gonna we're gonna make this an advocacy campaign for us to make sure all of our clients all of our partners are aware And then we took it much broader, much broader just across the country and saying, hey, we got to go to the schools as well because we know the youth are getting involved in this.

Jesse AllenHOST
And so that's where some of the risks come in when it comes to, you know, farms and ranches, right, Laramie?
