Episode 95: Embracing Life After 60 - The Hidden Reality of Family Caregiving with Lance A. Slatton
6:36

Robin McCoyHOST
We saw this coming, you know, and then all of a sudden she can't walk, right? And so how did you build into all of this? And, you know, how did the senior care influencer and you built the YouTube channel go? How, what are you doing with all of this?
L
6:58Lance A. SlattonGUEST
Yeah, so, well, first it started off with, you know, around the three year mark, two and a half year, three year mark, you know, I had actually called my wife and I, Robin, it's kind of funny, you know, even to this day, but at the time I literally thought I invented this wheel, right? You know, we all know the wheel exists, but if somebody doesn't tell you there's wheels out there, you don't know that they exist.
L
7:23Lance A. SlattonGUEST
And so I called her and I was having lunch with a friend and in his building there was actually a home health care, not to be confused with home care.
L
7:32Lance A. SlattonGUEST
There was a home health care company hiring and I had done paramedic training, EMT training, you know, I'd worked in the hospital.
L
7:41Lance A. SlattonGUEST
But then mostly for academic reasons and scheduling, I was working in the labs doing student teaching in the head of our medical fraternity at the university.
L
7:49Lance A. SlattonGUEST
I thought maybe they might have a job that would be, you know, conducive with my academic schedule and my other requirements.
L
7:56Lance A. SlattonGUEST
And, you know, anybody that's worked in a university knows you don't really get paid much money at university.

The Unexpected Caregiver: What to Do When a Parent Suddenly Needs Help

L
18:57Lance A. SlattonGUEST
Well, the first thing I would do, like we said, the unexpected caregiver is not an unqualified because they're overwhelmed.

Diane CarboHOST
How does that help the family caregivers in what you do? Because this is not something that every caregiving agency offers.

One of the other things that I always ask all my guests, and I know you inside and out, but again, some of our listeners might not, is have you been personally touched with dementia in your family or circle of friends?
L
4:25Lance A. SlattonGUEST
Well, my grandmother, who I was almost as close to as my own mother, she developed dementia when I was in my late teens.
L
4:35Lance A. SlattonGUEST
And it was one of those situations like I'm sure, you know, millions of other families had.
L
4:43Lance A. SlattonGUEST
My grandmother lived down south, and she was a traditional southern belle, if you will, where she was from the era.
L
4:50Lance A. SlattonGUEST
She never got a driver's license, never worked outside of the home, though she surely worked inside the home raising six children and being a housemaker.

And, you know, what do you think America is really failing at in terms of this process?
Inside the Client’s Mind: The Emotional Reality of the Family Caregiver (with Lance A. Slatton)

L
8:31Lance A. SlattonGUEST
So, well, here in Michigan where we're at, we're actually a non-licensed state, but most people don't know that.
L
8:38Lance A. SlattonGUEST
You know, family caregivers and family aren't really preparing, planning, and positioning themselves to be as educated and really aware of what home care is or even long-term care in general.
L
8:51Lance A. SlattonGUEST
Often until there's a crisis and they need to know, and then they're making sometimes rash, you know, decisions under the gun.
L
8:59Lance A. SlattonGUEST
And so we like to educate, like kind of, like you said, a great segue to this question.

Ken AccardiHOST
So I guess, you know, just any other things of underrated ways, let's say that an owner can think about how they could genuinely stand apart other than, you know, just their price and the availability of a caregiver.
Why Family Caregiving Feels So Overwhelming Featuring Lance A. Slatton
L
4:52Lance A. SlattonGUEST
But not once, either in the hospital, during surgery, post-surgery, in the rehab, at home, did anybody ever say to us, and my dad was a veteran also, and never offered resources, never said, "Have you looked into this? Are you aware of this?" And so I got really, really overwhelmed because I'm doing some student instructing at the university.
L
5:20Lance A. SlattonGUEST
And I just called my wife one day after going to have lunch with a friend, and I said, "You know, why don't we start a company where we send people out to the homes to help people like us?" I go-
