So with that in mind, what as a spiritual director, what do you think is actually happening in the interior life when we are attaching to something? And why does that make it harder for us to hear God? Why can't He just break through and say, hey, stop doing the thing because I have something to tell you?

He's God, so technically He could.

Like the Holy Spirit can do whatever He wants to do.

And I think that sometimes the Lord really does break through those attachments.

But as you were talking, like I said, it creeps in silently.
