Right.

And, uh, the sheriff called me one day and he made a proposal.

He said, "Hey, I hear you're gonna leave me and go to the feds, you know?" And he goes...

I said, "Yeah." He said, "I don't want you to go.

What, what, what, what can we make happen here to, uh, keep Kyle Overmyer at, uh, the sheriff's office?" I said, "I don't know." So he offered me detective spot and I said no.

He goes, "I'll, I'll do better.

I'll put sergeant stripes on you right here and, uh, you'll be a detective sergeant." I was only, like, 27, 28.

Hmm.

Oh, so you'd just take some of the pills out?

Yep, yep, to feed my, feed my addiction.

And, uh, well then, h- you know, I'd have to get real creative.

And, uh, I remember one day it was really bothering me because I was getting really low on, uh, pills, and it was on a Saturday.

And I'll never forget, I went in, and we had this take back box where people in the public would come in and they would dump any of their old prescription drugs instead of flushing them down the toilet.

They started this whole program, which is pretty much statewide in Ohio now.

And I thought, "You know what? I'm gonna go in and see what might be in there." So I did.

What was the plea deal early on?

Right

... tell you the truth.

I did some pretty unique things where people were writing articles about it.

I had the first ever Taxpayer Hero Award in the state of Ohio because I was saving money and rehabilitating inmates.

And, um, things were going really good.

I mean, really good.

And then, um, during that time, um, uh, I was diagnosed with arthritis in 2010.

Ugh.
