Kurt LagerGUEST
When we became our own department, I was asked to be the director, and then, um, not too long ago I got, uh, appointed as the chief by the Ocean Safety Commission.

Kurt LagerGUEST
And, um, what that means for me, like what's changed is, your- to your question is I've, I've always been a lifeguard and I've been really focused on operations, and even before we became a department, I think our role within the city, it was much smaller.

Kurt LagerGUEST
The job itself was the same, but I think we were kind of bursting at the seams as, as a department.

Kurt LagerGUEST
We saw the need for us to do more in the world of water safety, drowning prevention, and everything.

yeah so you know we have life lifeguards and lifeguard towers they're out in the beach they're out in the elements so they're fairly vulnerable to wind impacts and weather impacts so we were monitoring the storm really closely and we have a threshold of about 45 miles per hour sustained winds at that point we need to shutter our lifeguard towers it's mostly for our employees safety because the windows can blow in and stuff can happen so Saturday, the winds consistently built throughout the day, but we were able to keep lifeguard towers open for normal operations.

Kurt LagerGUEST
And then, so we started the day in a mobile response mode and we had people in trucks and we were just patrolling, making warnings and responding to 911 calls.

Kurt LagerGUEST
And then by about 1030 and 11, we had majority of the lifeguard towers back open around the island.

I know they come back to you sometimes and say, hey, this happened, you know, I was able to help someone.
