And I'm like, I'm like, you know, there's a great scene and, kingdom come where they're like you know hey we're with child we want batman to help us raise it and here frank miller's like nah man they are they are gonna bang their way through a mountain and then she's gonna talk about how hungry she is and i was like is this is this parody like i don't understand what's going on here and then you have all these very delicate moments where wonder woman batman and supergirl are all on panel at the same time and it's like oh the broken family this must be killing clark like i really really am enjoying this dynamic and And then you have that.

And I'm like, what, what is this?

This is mad magazine.

And even if some of the lines were, but I think it was just kind of like page after page after page of this.

Now, the Superman-Wonder Woman pairing in this context, I totally get.

Not unlike Kingdom Come, like you said.

And especially when we carry this forward to later, when Lara is asking, she finally has an opportunity to talk to her father because she's been hidden away on Paradise Island.

But by writing Wally as a normal guy, suddenly readers could relate and the book became a hit.

He then wrote Kingdom Come with Alex Ross, but the two had a huge falling out after the artist accused Waid of taking too much credit for the story that Ross was the architect of.

Then Waid got his dream job over at Marvel writing Captain America, but then Heroes Reborn happened and he lost the gig to Rob Liefeld after just 10 issues, which led to Waid very briefly writing X-Men.

Briefly, because he and longtime Uncanny X-Men writer, Scott Lobdell, hated each other.

So I'm curious how you go into a book like this and you're reading it and like, were you lost? Were you like, what is going on here? What is this?

No, yeah, I mean, it's like a little bit Batman Beyond, and it's a little bit Kingdom Come, and it's a little bit, you know, Scorn Supreme, and you've got some, like, it just felt like a number of other crossover alt-universe stories in many ways.

Right? What if things were really violent, and people were getting killed, and...

Yeah, but I'm used to this.

And so, yeah, it is an interesting – it's a very deflating moment.

It's both kind of boring in some ways and also like, oh, this is going to be a thing.

And they just take it away like, what if it wasn't a thing? what if we're kind of not going to gather the superheroes and Batman's going to leave the book for a bit so yeah I kind of I felt that similarly as well I mean in Kingdom Come it's a bit more like a slow moving train right Supes gets one woman and they go we're going to go through the world and we're going to grab heroes that still believe in what we believe in yeah whereas here it's almost immediately discarded

It's weird, too, because they make it seem like everyone's going to follow Batman because he's been doing it for so long.

That can be controversial.

Like, I quite like, uh, sort of a classic Superman series, Kingdom Come.

At, at many key moments in the story, they're making very odd expressions for what is happening.

Mm-hmm.

And then they fall into an uncanny valley of this isn't like someone just did an oil painting based on, like, a series of, like, reference photos, and it, like, goes to hyperrealism.

It's, we came very close to just doing a still ph- still photo in, like, pencil and ink, but we didn't get there, and now we're in the uncanny valley and it looks fucked up.

I'm not going to mention, again, all of them because we're going to be here all day.

But some of these classics include Justice, Marvel's Astro City, Earth X, Superman Peace on Earth, and of course, Kingdom Come.

He is one of the few comic book creators that help usher in comics and introduce this medium into the mainstream media, working on movies like Unbreakable, Glass, and Spider-Man 1 and 2.

He's also done promotional work for video games like Assassin's Creed 3 and Watch Dogs.

In nineteen ninety-six, Mark Waid and Alex Ross's prestige miniseries Kingdom Come, a superhero epic starring the aged-up DC pantheon, which heavily borrows plot points from a rejected Moore pitch, Twilight of the Superheroes, hides cameos and references to Watchmen in a cheeky imagine-if fashion.

Watchmen was optioned for a Hollywood film adaptation immediately upon its completion in nineteen eighty-six, but would remain in development hell for twenty-three years.

Director Terry Gilliam, who was signed on to direct a version of the script in the late nineties, famously called the work unfilmable.
