And historically, we've been under-recognizing two conditions and not acknowledging that they occur at really quite high levels.
4:08
And we've been looking at only 13 years.
4:10
That's only 13 years that we have been able to diagnose.
4:13
And initially, after that silo, the services that were developed, they were in silos as well.
4:18
For example, you had the ADHD team and you had the autism team.
4:21
And autism team was usually with intellectual disability services, where it was thought for a very long time that a lot of intellectual disability cohort have autism.
4:31
They have, but those people who are autistic without intellectual ability, that trumps the number much more high as compared to intellectual disability.

What is the emotional toll perhaps of someone who has AUDHD but never figures it out?
0:06
Th- this reminds me of a, um, of something that happened recently.
0:12
Somebody, um, a mother, um, contacted me from, um, from Canada.
0:19
She emailed me, and she said that she has read my book.
0:23
She had, she had seen our, um, our, our previous podcast, and for a very long time she was in grief because her son died a year ago.
0:35
Um, his name was Adam.
0:39
Um, he was a musician.

What can undiagnosed AUDHD look like?
30:47
Is it possible for the ADHD to be weighted more towards the autism or weighted more towards the ADHD? In other words, can someone mask one side of the diagnosis? Can they mask the autism so well that they never become aware that they are also autistic? Or they mask the ADHD side so well that they only think that they're autistic?
31:11
The masking happens at a very... subconscious level or unconscious level.
31:23
A lot of the time, because when you look at our ADHD, a lot of our ADHDs, when they come to me, they're already, 50% of the cases, they're either diagnosed with one condition or the other.
31:34
So the other person, the assessor, was not able to see the other part of it because one was masking the other part.
31:43
For example, when I gave you the analogy of the city of Prague and the cloud cover in between, and that was ADHD masking, the autism.
31:52
Once autism comes out, it can actually mask the ADHD as well.
31:58
So the masking is different for both conditions.
