But what do you like to look for beyond just kind of the conventional testing that can help us understand a little bit more about what's going on beneath the surface when it comes to fertility?

Kayla SmithGUEST
I look at not just what their basic blood labs are saying, but I like to look at the whole picture.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And one thing to point out is when we're looking at conventional medicine labs, they are looking at a very small parameter for what's normal.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And they're usually looking for, are you a candidate for IVF? And so I'm looking at, are you a candidate to heal and figure out why you're not getting pregnant in the first place? Let's fix that piece.

um but yeah we knew we wanted to grow our family and so um I got pregnant for a second time and everything seemed to go as planned um The only thing we were worried about, obviously, is preeclampsia again.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And so at my routine anatomy scan that happens around 18 to 20 weeks, we found out that our son, who we named Brooks, had several fatal fetal anomalies.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And so at that time, we saw maternal fetal medicine, and we also saw a pediatric cardiologist.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And essentially were told that there was nothing that they could do, that this was not an operable condition.

Kayla SmithGUEST
The worst that they had seen and also just the constellation of findings with Brooks's heart defect were just not something they had ever seen before.

Kayla SmithGUEST
So with that, my MFM provider basically was like, I'm really sorry, but there's nothing we can do for you in the state of Idaho any longer.

Gemma GaudetHOST
on top of that you're then told you can't get the care that you need in idaho so walk us through what that was like to have to go out of state to get this health care that you needed

Kayla and Christina, can you maybe introduce yourselves, tell us a little bit more about your business and how it all

Kayla SmithGUEST
We're super proud of all the things that we've learned, all the different lenders we've dealt with, all the different, probably all the relationships we've made actually in the last 18 months.

Kayla SmithGUEST
I go to something now that I went to before being a broker, sussing it all out, thinking, is this something we want to do? And now they're all coming up to me and saying, hi, it's just, and that's a hundred people in a room.

And I wanted to maybe take this opportunity to now turn to Kayla to talk about a case in Connecticut that has some similar issues, some parallels, green hushing as well, to talk about the Reynolds case, Kayla.

Kayla SmithGUEST
So back in 2022, which is crazy that it was four years ago, we brought a case against Reynolds consumer products and for a product known as their hefty recycling bags.

Kayla SmithGUEST
complaint alleges that this was a product that was put onto the marketplace circa 2017 and the product is as advertised as we legend the complaint it's a product that it directs consumers to take their otherwise good recyclables like milk jugs and cardboard and aluminum seltzer cans put them into this particular recycling bag that has as we legend the complaint that has labeling on the box of bags that says perfect for all of your recycling needs it has a blue pictogram of a blue recycling truck with the recyclable symbol on it.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And so the packaging and then all of the associated advertising material, it directs consumers, like I said, to do this, to take their good recyclables, put them into this bag, tie it up, put it into their blue bin for curbside collection in Connecticut.

Kayla SmithGUEST
The problem is in Connecticut, that plastic bag, it's a plastic bag, and all of the otherwise good recyclables are not recycled at any Connecticut materials recovery facility.

Was that a difficult process to come up with your, your whole framework there, your system, and to find people that would do the certifications?

Kayla SmithGUEST
Yeah, I mean, it was a little difficult in the beginning, but I had a vision in my head of what I wanted to create, and it came out of looking for something that I couldn't find.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And so I tried to find a fertility certification program for myself, and it just wasn't there.

Kayla SmithGUEST
I had been a personal trainer for 10 years, so I was kind of in the health space, but not in fertility.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And so I took that, what I knew from that, and then I just started digging into research.

Kayla SmithGUEST
I actually went to the library and was, like, studying, okay, how do we, you know, what do we need to do to help heal infertility, and what foods do we need to eat? And so I just pieced together this program with the certification course.

... identity shifts you had to embrace, and how did you start to get yourself to that level when you maybe didn't believe it at first?

Kayla SmithGUEST
And I know I don't seem like it, but I am an introvert, and so I was very nervous at first.

Kayla SmithGUEST
So I really had to teach myself how it wasn't about me, it was about the person I was trying to help, and, like, get over yourself and just g- be visible and be out there and share your truth.

What are we doing for Small Business Month?

Kayla SmithGUEST
Yeah, so at First Wine Bank, we love to celebrate our small businesses, especially during the month of May, which is Small Business Month.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And with that, we like to recognize that small businesses play a crucial role in supporting our local communities and local economy.

Kayla SmithGUEST
So with that, we have our Open for Business series that we're highlighting Ko Aloha.

Kayla SmithGUEST
And with that, we've been able to really meet with them and hear their stories and journeys that they've taken to get to where they are today, whether they're just starting off or they maybe are continuing on with family generations.
