So Kat, if you wouldn't mind, could you tell us a little bit about how your research navigates these questions of voice?
12:50
Absolutely, and I think it's, uh, it's absolutely brilliant, and thank you so much for inviting us on this panel, 'cause I think it's so fascinating, 'cause both of you do work with people, let's say, and I do work with literature, which means that there are often days when I'm in absolute solitude, when I don't have this dialogue, when I don't have a space where I can actually interview people or have a discussion with my students, and obviously teaching offers you that opportunity.
13:15
But I think the biggest challenge for studying literature, and especially studying literature from, well, wanting or not, a European perspective, and studying Latin American literature, possess a lot of the risk, comes from not wanting to offend certain groups, and I think that's definitely, um, what changed my perspective about my research was probably reading more and more about the conflict in Colombia and how the conflict wasn't an ongoing thing between '48, '56, and then from, uh, '62 onwards to 2016.
13:46
It wasn't a conflict that has been finished.
13:48
The conflict or the peace processes, despite signing the peace process with FARC, uh, we're still talking about a conflict in a situation of Colombian politics, in a situation with, uh, thousands and thousands of people every year going into the state of Desaparecidos, and Desaparecidos are people who have been disappeared.
14:05
They haven't disappeared willingly, they have been disappeared.
14:08
So we're talking a lot about obviously abusing the political situation, and reading about that, reading about the culture aspect, and somehow also using that frame for, well, for my own upbringing, for my own perspective, from maybe something that hits closer to home.
