What can you tell us about some of the political background that has led to this bill being introduced?
2:32

2:40
It's been an election winner for politicians across Australia and across the world, this blaming of particularly in Australia, young people, and particularly young Aboriginal people and migrants and refugees.

This bill is actually a response to A court case where the Supreme Court held that a man in prison in Victoria had been denied his right to one hour out of cell because he was put in an exercise yard once a day, but it was a very enclosed exercise yard with mesh over the top.

Hence the sort of quotation from the case which says it.

And the response to that court case by Corrective Services and by the government was to say, well, we're going to change the law.

Do you think it's foreseeable and realistic that under these changes to the law, that that sort of thing will happen where people are just kept for days, weeks, even months without getting any fresh air or seeing the sky?
