Episode 294: Senior Landscape Architect and TCL Associate Kar Gan on designing Adelaide's award-winning Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari Stage 3

What was the condition of the site? I can only imagine, but what was the condition of the site before the intervention, and what vision did TCL and you have, you know, for the broader, uh, uh, allowing the broader team i- in- in terms of transforming this to what it is now?

Um, if, if you walk through this stretch, um, before stage three, it really just feel like a drainage channel.
K

Um, the creek is actually a piece of, um, flood infrastructure from, from '30s, so it's, it's obviously built to move water really quickly through Adelaide's western suburbs.

Um, till this date, you know, that function still had to work, but the place had really lost its, um, ecological and social value.

So [laughs] as part of that, the, the, the, the team's am- ambitious ambition was how do we actually, you know, keep that flood performance and, and but turn it back into a living creek? And, and a, a bi- a big part of that was, was rethinking the landscape as an ecological system, so not just infrastructure, like, you know, things retaining e- existing trees, removing invasive species, and, and rebuilding habitat became core design moves from the start.

And, and that thinking also came through really early in, in conversation with the traditional owners.
