This weekend and so obviously last weekend didn't go the way we wanted to, but a lot of great learning experiences for us and moments and plan on getting that done and putting that game away today and then moving on to our opponent.
0:18
But just really proud of how hard the guys played and proud of our leadership.
0:22
We're going to need it even more now, but this is, you know, obviously suffered our first loss, but looking forward to see how we react to it.
0:30
Life is things that happen to you, and you get defined by how you react to it.
0:34
I don't think it's going to define us in this season, this team, but looking forward to the preparation, looking forward to getting back to work and focusing on the next challenge, which is Arizona State.
0:46
here at home and we're excited about that game and I've known you know Kenny Dillingham for a long time and have a lot of respect for him and and the way he runs things, and they have a really good team.

and then just wanted to ask you about you know some personnel notes like what's the outlook uh starting the week with with evan johnson and also lj martin too is is he getting closer potentially to a return
6:45
Yeah, LJ's are getting really close.
10:50
Do you like the 24 team playoff idea, coach? You like it?
10:57
Oh, yeah.
10:57
Me personally, I like the 2014 playoff.
11:00
I think it'll make football more interesting, especially every game will count in November.
11:07
I think it gives an opportunity for everybody to prove it on the field.
11:11
And I don't have a problem with it.
11:13
The FCS level has been doing it for a long time, Division II.
15:38
uh to get a team together in college football and then by presumably byu's of the world get a shorter end of the stick is that a viable concern do you think coach
13:31
You don't want to make a habit of that, but it's nice to know that when things don't go perfectly, you can still find a way to be resilient and grind it out.
13:36
Yeah, I mean, it's the leadership on the team and the guys believing in themselves.
13:42
And there's no finger pointing or blame.
13:45
The guys just keep working hard for each other.
13:47
And, you know, it's guys that make mistakes, but then find ways to make it better and to learn from it.
13:54
So just happy with the overall team leadership and We have resilient young men.
14:00
And it was fun.

21 MINS LATER

35:17
What's your perspective on the story he just shared
22:50
How much did Bear elevate his play against the Fighting Irish?
22:55
Well, I mean, Bear's been amazing all year long, and he's been great since he showed up here on campus as a true freshman last year.
23:01
So I think at the time of his freshman year to now, he's grown so much in so many different ways, and he is a seasoned vet now, and I get to coach that guy.
23:13
I mean, I don't know if I can claim anything that he was raised the right way with the ball in his hand.
23:20
We're just trying to give him chances to make plays.
23:22
But he's answered the call every time.
23:24
And you combine that with all the players on our team and our O-line and our receivers.
26:25
What did you see on that play?
18:42
How much did Bear elevate his play against the Fighting Irish?
18:46
Well, I mean, Bear's been amazing all year long, and he's been great since he showed up here on campus as a true freshman last year.
18:54
So I think at the time of his freshman year to now, he's grown so much in so many different ways, and he is a seasoned vet now, and I get to coach that guy.

I mean, I don't know if I can claim anything that he was raised the right way with the ball in his hand.
19:12
We're just trying to give him chances to make plays, but he's answered the call every time.
19:17
You combine that with all the players on our team and our O-line and our receivers.
19:23
We're down to L.J. Martin this game, so we needed to replace the run game.
22:16
What did you see on that play? I
0:00
Great weekend, obviously happy about the win, happy where we're at, and we're at 6-0 right now, mid-season, so half the season is done, regular season, so we're really excited about the progress we've made as a team in the last week and also throughout the season so far.
0:20
I thought it was a good game after watching the film.
0:22
There's a lot of back and forth, and there's a lot of things that... that we could have done better.
0:29
And, you know, there's a lot of things that we could have helped ourselves out.
0:33
And that's from coaches to the players.
0:35
And then there's a, you know, there's things that I know that they wish they could do differently.

10:44
Your evaluation of this just where you say, I know you've talked about how this is where you guys expect it to be, but at the midway point of the season, where do you want to continue to see improvement?
10:54
Yeah, I think the week-to-week improvement, the development for our team.
78:23
Yeah.
78:24
And but that does- that just doesn't happen, uh, by you being, being, uh, BYU and having a, a great fan base.
78:30
You have to put in all the work and, and a lot of sacrifice goes into it.
78:33
And so, uh, there, there's a lot of people that have worked on this, and even for decades we have alumni that have been waiting for this opportunity for us to get into the, in the Power Conference.
78:41
And now that we're here, we've gotta make sure that we make, we, we make the most out of it.
78:45
I, I want our guys to embrace the opportunity, embrace where they're at, but at the same time, take a step back and look at, and be, and just be appreciative and have gratitude for what they've been able to accomplish.
78:54
But, but we still, we still got to trend in the right way and we still gotta get better.
EboPANELIST
82:25
So just give a shout-out to, uh, your offense and, and the, the, their ability to produce this year.
6:33
Top 10 versus top 10, that is.
6:35
Yeah, and, and, you know, Notre Dame's, uh, I mean, that, that program's, uh, got so much, uh, h- history and t- and tradition behind it.
6:43
And, um, you know, it's, it's, uh, you look back at, at the things that they've been able to do throughout the decades in c- in college football and it's nice to have them here in our home and, uh, in front of our fans.
6:54
Uh, have a lot of, uh, respect for Marcus Freeman as a head coach.
6:57
He does a great job.
6:59
Uh, he's been good to me throughout the years and, and I, I really like the way he does things.

0:24
Um, really proud of the team over the weekend against, in the game against Iowa State and, and, uh, you know, got an early start, had a day extra to, to prep for Notre Dame, got to watch them play.

Yeah, I'm excited for this week.
0:03
I got a game on Friday, so a short week, which means that we have to speed up the preparation.
0:11
But we've been here before.
0:12
We had this every year.

And so I think last year we were coming off a game on the road against Colorado and came back and played West Virginia on a Friday.

Is that something you hope to see that number go down? Even if LJ is doubtful this week, do you want to see the other running backs carry their workload, if you will, in the absence of LJ if he's out?
9:00
Yeah, of course.
29:16
Do you like what you see over there, and what's the transition been like with Kelly Poppinga?
29:21
Yeah, first of all, I, I mean, I love Jay Hill.
29:23
He's a g- great friend of mine, so really happy about the opportunities that he has and things that he's doing there in Michigan.
29:28
Um, you know, but part of that is that when you're going through a, a business and when you're going through a team and, and a program like we have, uh, you should always think about a, a plan of, of people that, that can possibly be coordinators and possibly leaders.
29:42
And so Kelly Poppinga is somebody that I had circled from the very beginning, that I thought he had all the, the, the, the genetics of becoming a great D-coordinator.
29:50
Uh, and number one is his work ethic.
29:52
So as we start working, and, and he's had some great mentors along the way, you know, he's...
31:45
I understand you'd rather let your team's play do the talking rather than you getting caught up in the politics of the sport, but do you think the Big 12 will find it challenging to get more than a single team in the playoff again this year because of the perceived depth of the SEC and the Big 10?
38:25
Do you like what you see over there, and what's the transition been like with Kelly Poppinga?

Yeah, first of all, I, I mean, I love Jay Hill.

I understand you'd rather let your team's play do the talking rather than you getting caught up in the politics of the sport, but do you think the Big 12 will find it challenging to get more than a single team in the playoff again this year because of the perceived depth of the SEC and the Big 10?
4:16
How do you feel the team is health-wise heading into the second part of the season, which is really a nine-game second half, if you will?
4:22
Yeah, I mean, I think looking at it, we're still missing Raider, right? And he's getting better and getting better fast.
4:30
And so we anticipate him joining us soon.
4:34
Sionimo has been out.
4:34
Yeah, Sionimo has been out, and that one's taking some time.
4:38
Gentry, that one was kind of, you know, we were hoping that it would be different, but going into it, it seemed like I think he posted on social media.

No, they're full of great athletes.
2:47
That's usually what TCU has.
2:49
A lot of size and athletic ability.
2:55
You can see the talent that's on their team.
2:57
You can see the reason why they're able to get a lot of...

Offensively, they move the ball quite a bit.

How much was it that the offensive line just opened up massive holes and they protected Bear? How pleased are you with their performance so far?
15:54
Been really happy with the O-line.
15:55
I thought the defensive line did a good job getting knocked back and limited their run plays.
16:01
They had a couple big plays past 10, but other than that, most of the stuff was handled up front and most of the stuff that they gained on our D-line was outside.
16:11
Our O-line did a great job blocking.
16:12
They don't get a lot of publicity for it.
16:15
So thank you for doing that, Dana, because they'll thank you.
Dana Green
Dana GreenCORRESPONDENT
17:55
Have you reached out to him? That's got to be the most difficult thing for a coach to see one of his current or former players go down like that?
4:47
It's like with BYU, if you're the opponent, no lead is safe because you guys just continue to wear people down.
4:56
Yeah, we pride ourselves on the grit and just the resilience and being in our program.
5:04
And so, you know, we work really hard in the offseason to try to be the best conditioned team.
5:09
I say that everybody's conditioned, you know, but that's why we work and we are physical in fall camp.
5:16
I don't know how you're supposed to learn how to be physical and fight through it.
5:20
Uh, the pain and, and, and we, we also know that it's when you get in shape, it's not a matter of you never getting tired.
5:27
Getting tired is part of being in shape.
9:05
How do they compare to East Carolina, who you played last year in the non-conference, kind of a high group of six type program? Are there any parallels in terms of the talent level at Colorado State, and what can you tell us about the Rams?
25:39
And we're glad that the latest chapter is being written here in Provo.
25:43
Yeah, I've known the Uluwabe family forever.
25:46
And so I actually wouldn't be here if it weren't for the Uluwabe family.
25:51
and the way they treated me and my family, my siblings.
25:53
And so I think his grandpa, Peter, one of the first Tongans to settle here in Provo, and he was a bishop.
26:02
And in that ward, that was all the Utah County, the Tongan ward, and that ward is now, You know, years later, three stakes.

2:39

2:46
I said it after in postgame that, you know, Just really impressed with all our fans and just love all of them and the energy they brought.
2:54
You know, I think a lot of places fans would leave or they wouldn't be there as much as with a matchup.

2:10
We want to take care of what we can control, which is making sure that we're ready and prepared.

With so much, uh, not only expected, but kind of understood given all the returners and high expectations, what, if anything, surprised you during fall camp about this group?
5:10
Honestly, is the amount of players that we have, and, uh, when, when you wanna establish depth and you wanna see competition, um, it's this, uh, young group of players that, that are here.
5:20
Whether they're a freshman out of high school or, or returned missionaries, it's a lot of talent.
5:25
The, the missionaries, we had to kind of just scale back a little bit because they, they, I mean, you know, luckily, their head coach has been on a mission before too, and, and your body doesn't really, uh, communicate with your, with your brain on what you want to do.
5:37
And so we know that with them it'll be a little bit of more of a, a work in progress.
5:42
The freshmen, I've been really impressed with them, and, and, um, they're, they're gonna see a lot more freshmen on the field because we can play them now.
5:49
With the new rules, uh, you don't have to make a decision on a red shirt or not.
10:29
How have you been able to keep them locked in and focused on this season? Because it could be very special.
17:48
With so much not only expected but kind of understood given all the returners and high expectations, what, if anything, surprised you during fall camp about this group?

18:30
The freshmen, I've been really impressed with them.
19:18
What does, in your mind, the perfect game look like on Saturday from the BYU standpoint?
8:53
How steady a build does it feel like it's been for you to get to this point?
8:56
I think the goal was when I first got this job is prepare for that opportunity for us to go into a power conference.
9:02
And then when we went in, it wasn't it was luckily I've had some experience going into that before at Utah.
9:08
And so, you know, we have we transitioned into it and I feel like there's still some momentum to gain.
9:14
And there's still a lot of room to make us better.
9:16
And that's my job as a head coach, is make sure that we can be at our best and do whatever I can to help these young men perform at their best.
