So can you tell me, give me an example without revealing someone's identity of what you would call a story that you'd like to share about someone, a whaiora, who's now doing well in life?
22:19
Well, there's probably two I can think of at the moment that are with us here.
22:23
One of them is a young wahine Māori, and she is 21.
22:33
She came to us, she's been with us eight months ago.
22:38
And she came to us having spent years in a combination of she had a little bit of state care and then she was obviously in addiction and then many visits to different mental health wards.
23:01
mental health treatment.
23:02
Henry Bennett was one of them.

So the root causes, if, if you're thinking along the lines of, um, uh, what we believe in here, which is the Go- Gabor Maté style of thinking, is that all addiction comes from...
1:41
It's not a disease, it's not a moral failing, but it's a coping mechanism, which is useful at the time, um, but not useful overall in our life.
1:50
And it's more around seeking some kind of connection, dealing with some kind of trauma.
1:56
Um, maybe it's a, a, a lack of genuine emotional connec- connection in life overall.
2:02
Um, and, and that's what we look at underlying any addiction here.
2:06
Mm.
