And I was a hospitalist for a number of years, and I took care of a lot of these patients with hip fractures.

And as I discharged them to skilled nursing facilities, I realized that a large portion of these patients would never regain the same independence that they had pre-fracture.

And then, as I made my way into endocrinology, I met colleagues like Albert Hsueh, who had already been in this field for a while, and I saw what he was doing, looking at cohorts of women across the nation, sort of looking at their bone health over time and how it changed, and particularly looking at the perimenopause and menopause period, and saw that there really were opportunities-

And so when women enter the perimenopausal years and you start to take that estrogen away, the cells that are breaking down bone then start to rev up, and so that's when they're really sort of starting to outpace the cells that are building bone.

And so for women, um, they really start to lose bone around that time, and the rate of bone loss is probably the quickest that it will be across a woman's lifespan.
