12:39
question.
12:42
Right.
12:43
Okay, so I think some of what is happening is what I just mentioned, which is people get in to mid-career.
12:52
And this is really good for early professionals to understand.
12:56
people get into mid-career and feel disconnected because they haven't done that work that I was talking about.
13:04
They don't know who they are.
13:06
They don't understand their opportunities and limitations and challenges.
15:20
right wow okay so yes thank you julia for sharing such amazing insights with us and you know like you said right um the world of career is now different from how it used to be five six years ago right so what do you think are like some of the biggest misconceptions that people have you know about career growth basically
MarkHOST
6:00
But how do people build influence at work without being fake or overlaut? Is there a technique or an opinion?
6:07
Yeah, yeah, there is.
6:08
I think for most people, again, understanding who you are and how you're going to operate within the workplace is really important.
6:19
So for me, I am not a loud person.
6:22
So you put me into, you know, a meeting, a situation like that.
6:27
I'm not going to be the first one to speak.
6:29
I'm not going to be loud.

6 MINS LATER

MarkHOST
12:30
I think people are starting to look and understand that a little bit now and, and, and, they realizing that perhaps the burnout's coming from being in the wrong environment as you said but that personal question for you now how did you know personal challenges losing your parents and becoming a mother quite keen to hear about that reshape how you how you think about career and success
FortuneHOST
13:36
Mm-hmm
13:37
... separate.
13:38
So I think that there is some benefit and, and warrant to doing that.
13:44
However, at the end of the day, you are still bringing your whole self to work.
13:50
Whether or not you communicate that to the people around you is something different, but you are still living in your body with your mind, with your experiences.
14:02
And so I think this idea of creating a fierce separation, it really makes it hard for us to honor who we are.
14:12
And so I think so much of our work and our career is influenced by our life and what's going on, and I think if we compartmentalize too much, then I think that ends up really eating away at you in a lot of cases.
FortuneHOST
16:16
[laughs]
AbrahamHOST
4:15
in their career?
4:19
I think there's a couple reasons, but one of the main ones is I think a lot of people were pushed into certain careers, either by their family, usually a parent of some kind.
4:32
Sometimes it's just the culture that they're around or the opportunities that are available to them in the area that they live in.
4:41
And so when that happens, we're not really taking into consideration who we are as people.
4:46
We're just looking at what's available.
4:48
What are the opportunities? Where do I see people around me working and let me go that way? Or, you know, my parents or my grandparents have a vision for me and I'm going to follow that path because I want to make them happy.
5:04
And then what happens is eventually you get to a point where you know who you are and you become more comfortable in that.

14 MINS LATER

AbrahamHOST
19:42
And I
13:01
What does career ownership actually look like in today's workspace?
13:05
So...
13:06
In today's workspace, career ownership is honestly, I think, a little bit different than it used to be.
13:15
I think that we used to have a lot more ownership and opportunity in different organizations because we saw a path forward.
13:27
And there are so many organizations today that do not identify those paths early on.
13:33
And so it's very hard for us to see ourselves somewhere long term, which I think has been something that's been very disruptive to the world of work in the last handful of years.
13:47
I think all of the layoffs and all these different transitions with technology that we're seeing, it's really starting to change how people approach their career and what is possible.
16:18
How did those experiences influence your career and your outlook in life?
4:37
How do we confuse mastery for stacking skills?
4:42
Yeah.
4:43
So skills is so interesting.
4:45
And I think that there is a real heavy emphasis on skill development right now.
4:53
And I think that's because of how hiring has shifted in some sectors and in some position types, not everywhere.
5:02
I want to emphasize that.
5:03
Yeah.
7:24
Thank you.
