If I was like, oh, I really liked Game Changers and I want to find more similar stuff, are there ways in which you, on the back end as a cataloger, help users find similar stuff? themed books?

Julia LubeyGUEST
And I have to give credit, a large part of credit of finding books, depending on your interests in reading to our branch librarians and the people who are sort of on the ground talking to folks who are doing a lot more hard work than I am on the back end.

Julia LubeyGUEST
But on the back end of cataloging, Another part of my job is choosing subject headings, which if you type a word into the online catalog, like hockey, romance.

Julia LubeyGUEST
the website will index all of our records that catalogers make on the back end to pull out the books that have words like hockey and romance in them.

Julia LubeyGUEST
And those are terms that your catalogers are deciding to put into the record based on the book that they have on their hand.

Julia LubeyGUEST
So when I go into work and I pick out a stack of books that the library has purchased that I am processing to make sure, like step one, before they end up on the shelves or in your hand, I have that book in front of me and I'm sort of flipping through it and I'm looking at it and I'm looking at the record that already exists and deciding if I want to change anything about it.

Does the New York public library system have to deal with that at all? Does that ever come across or are you immune in New York of having to worry about complaints about these types of books and people wanting to take them off the shelf?
