I asked Julia what drew her to tell a story about stories.

I think that the thing that remained relevant to me throughout was just hearing a loved one tell a story and that feeling.

Like, I'm part Ukrainian, my grandma telling stories, like oral storytelling tradition being important in, like, lots of different cultures.

And the way we tell stories instinctively, we do zhuzh them up a little bit with some fairy tale, especially if we're talking about love and there's that tendency to slip into a, "Well, once upon a time," or like, "It was a-" [laughs]

Tell me what you mean by queered fairy tale.

You know, we watch those Disney films, and at the heart of a lot of them are these very transporting love stories.

And I do think that queer stories and romances usually are relegated to a sphere of more social realism.

So it felt really fun to see that fairy tale environment from the stories I'd listened to and watched when I was younger, but against the backdrop of, spoiler, two women falling in love.
