Civic Participation and Accountability: Empowering Citizens to Shape Governance
M
20:57Magretto LeleHOST
And, you know, this is even, for me, it's very important because when we think about the role young people play in politics in Nigeria or democracy in Nigeria, for the most part you see more of people who are you know used by politicians you know to force actually the path towards a positive democratic process so which means that education which remains really critical as well and speaking with youth is critical to kind of ramp up the very important role that young people should play in ensuring the civic rights of of Nigerians in democratic institutions so How do we break that gap between young people who know and have access to getting their voice out there and those who do not know and are unfortunately being used by politicians to carry out things that would typically thwart the democratic process?
J
22:07The biggest challenge we face in Nigeria relates to the challenges that young people themselves are confronted with.
J
22:17So you find that because of the governance challenges, especially regarding expanding economic opportunities for people to thrive, you now find a situation where a number of young persons become vulnerable to being used by political actors to perpetuate crimes against other citizens and this often happens during pre-election periods as you know in that whole campaign period now where we can already begin to see some of these things playing out with the way certain presidential candidates have been treated in certain parts of the country so you find that this number of young persons is not a widespread of young people it's a percentage which in my view is not widespread.
J
23:12The greater percentage of other young people are heavily invested in trying to make ends meet, survive in Nigeria, and to spotlight the possibilities of a better country and model this through their work.
J
23:34And they are also extending that whole grasp of how things can be to other young people through the different things that they do.
