Yeah, well, there are the first driver is actually the absence of fire for many of these systems for in some places over a century, right? So with sort of American and European colonization of parts of the Western U.S., That brought with it the removal or displacement of indigenous peoples who were oftentimes managing landscapes with fire.

It often brought with it also super extensive livestock grazing that removed surface fuels that formed the basis of surface fire regimes.

And then along came Smokey Bear and this mentality or policy of fire suppression.

which have all contributed to changes in forest structure.

Mostly more fuels, more continuous fuels from the surface to the canopy and more continuous fuels as you go over distances in these forests, more continuous ground fuels.

And so when we do get fires now, oftentimes these are fires that easily move from the ground up into the treetops and then can spread from treetop to treetop.
