um yeah no my it's funny my research had like different like spokes there was like gilded age manhattan research there was underworld manhattan research there was like you know hudson valley research and then there was a whole chunk which was just irish research you know some of that involved just reading like straight irish histories like the history of ireland from like pre-vikings to like you know Jerry Adams.

John StephensGUEST
And then I read a bunch of memoirs by more often than not female writers growing up in rural Ireland, you know, and or growing up in Dublin or Cork or, you know, Belfast or what have you about especially it was the best when I could find books that were written, you know, around the turn of the century.

John StephensGUEST
But fortunately, a lot of the quote-unquote country life of Ireland didn't really change that much until the 1950s.

John StephensGUEST
Until electricity really started coming to those small towns, people were living to a large degree the way they lived in the 1890s in terms of how they farmed.

John StephensGUEST
There was no light in the house, you know, the way they cared for their animals, the village life.

Is writing for you, can you talk about, I don't know if this is different than other writing, right? Like you write for television, you write, you know, like, is this a different kind of feel? Can you talk a little bit about that? And that as a writer, because I think a lot of people are like, oh, you just write, right? And I'm like, well...

You know, I think, again, this was something that was a, there was a lot of discussion about, and I also feel like, a- again, I'm always nervous about my memories and not wanting to put words in anybody's mouth, you know? But I feel like Amy had a strong opinion about not wanting Rory to be a saint on television, you know? And really didn't want her to be just, like, this ideal.

John StephensGUEST
That she was gonna be somebody who made mistakes, you know? Um, and that there was also going to be a line drawn from mother to daughter of, like, you know, guys come into their lives and they make decisions they might not have made, or their lives go left instead of right.

John StephensGUEST
And so drawing that line to Rory, I think, was part of it, but also saying, "This is the kid who is not going to be a golden idol," you know? They're gonna do things that we may not like, and they're gonna have to dig their way back out again, which I use, I'm gonna put this in air quotes.
Scott PattersonHOST
Was there discussion, were there discussions in the room about separating them when Emily discovered the Penland Lott, when Richard admitted the 30, 30 years of lunches with Penland Lott?

Yeah.

John StephensGUEST
But that first year, in that first season, I think there were, like, five of us, I wanna say, plus Amy, and then Dan was, you know, moving back and forth between Family Guy and Gilmore Girls at the time.

John StephensGUEST
It was interesting, right? 'Cause A- Amy knew very clearly what, I think, what the show was.

John StephensGUEST
But I remember the one th- I mean, the, having the biggest discussions about early on, in a really clarifying way for me, the Rory's first kiss, you know, the kiss and tell episode, where there are different ways that story could have gone, and Amy's had a very clear point of view.

John StephensGUEST
Like, no, the, the crux of the drama is the fact that Rory hasn't told Lorelai that she had this kiss.

John StephensGUEST
And in, in any other normal show, it would be about the fact of this 16-year-old girl having her first kiss, and that's so exciting.

John StephensGUEST
Yeah, so the law's pretty clear on that, right? You can't trade while insolvent.

John StephensGUEST
So you've got to be able to test under the Companies Act, you've got to be able to pay your debts when they're due and you've got to be balance sheet insolvent, which effectively in simple terms just means your assets are bigger than your liabilities, right? If you're not, then you're trading while insolvent and that attracts personal liability for directors.

John StephensGUEST
So you don't want to be in that position and you don't want to be hoping it's okay.

John StephensGUEST
You don't want to keep on trading and try and trade your way out of it because the benefit of a limited liability company is you have limited liability.
