So explain to us exactly what a turfy is and how you ended up at the University of Tennessee.
2:03
Yeah, well, a turfy, first of all, is, you know, someone that's passionate about turf grass science and grass, growing grass for a living.
2:10
So, you know, it's really what we call each other in the industry.
2:14
Most of the people that want to be golf course superintendents or greenkeepers for golf call themselves turfies.
2:19
And, you know, it's passionate because it's not work.
2:22
It's something you love to do.
2:24
But yeah, I came to doing what I'm doing.

What does natural grass enable you to do that? Sorry, what does hybrid surfaces enable you to do that natural grass doesn't necessarily allow?

He's a world renowned leader in the field of fields.
14:47
You look at the last Men's World Cup, 1.8 billion people watched the final.
14:51
That's 20% of the world watched that, and they enjoyed it, and they didn't even think of the field, sadly.
14:56
But there's, uh, so much that went into it, right?

[soccer ball thudding]
16:43
Some of the research we've done is, like, how do you manage this natural grass so when the ball lands it's gonna skip, and it's not gonna bounce too high, and it's gonna be at the knees or lower so the player can get the ball and do their move?
7:20
I'd assume it has something to do with player safety, too.
7:22
Yeah, absolutely.
7:23
It's wh- we focus for our safety guidelines is consistency and uniformity.
7:27
Not too hard and not too soft.
7:29
Not giving you way too much traction, and not being where th- they're gonna slip and fall also.
7:33
'Cause there's three components when it comes to the player safety.
7:36
There's the player, there's the surface, and then there's the footwear.
9:41
What? And then shipped it to Houston?
13:22
Talk us through this.
13:24
Correct.
13:24
So one of the things that was new to the 26th World Cup was we required the stadiums to install sod.
13:31
The sod was grown over top of plastic.
13:34
And when you grow sod over plastic, what you can do is a couple of things.
13:38
One, there's the sand that's in the root zone that's going to be at the stadium where it's going to be laid.
13:43
You can now grow the sod in about 45 to 55 millimeters of the same sand that's compatible with Over top of plastic.
