When you're a top player, then they can overcome them.

Well, especially at

oh dear,

this is not not the place to start.

So what I did was went through utilitarianism, Kantianism, ethics of care, all the major moral theories, and the four principles, explained them, tried to make them clinically relevant, and then pushed them as hard as I could to show the shortcomings of them, how they didn't do everything that we might want.

And I said this about the four principles, which I've elaborated since then.

So, what I think is problematic or taking our attention away from where it should be is that they put out or they're almost too clear and simple and seem to imply that thinking through a complex situation is just a case of finding the right ideas and pigeonholing things under these ideas.

There's no question that as a way to kind of organise some different ideas, it's good vocabulary, but as a method, it's not really helping us with the weighing up and the to-ing and fro-ing that we need to reach a conclusion.

I think that another issue with them is when there's an ambiguity between the principles, it's quite hard to resolve if you're going back to the level of theory.

Professor McMillan starts our conversation.

I mean, the country was in a really lousy mood in the mid-70s.

And we might have spoken about this last time.

We just had the Vietnam War, which was so divisive.

and unsatisfactory in its conclusions, and people were divided over race relations, and Richard Nixon had just resigned in disgrace, and the economy was in the toilet.

And so there was a lot of pessimism, and it was difficult to figure out how to sort of celebrate the country in a unifying way for people 50 years ago.

And, you know, the country did rebound and change dramatically.

But the presidency and the leader of the nation doing a historic milestone like this does add some influence for people and how they may or may not be feeling in terms of pride.
