Why ADHD Kids Struggle in School: The Brain Science of Focus, Learning & the Classroom | Dr. John Foxe
27:00

Danielle KellyHOST
So when parents hear, when neurodivergent parents hear little Johnny is not succeeding in the class, um, he's having trouble sitting still or focusing, how do we let them know that their kids are not, not really off the mark evolutionary, they weren't designed to sit there, and what can we do to compensate for that?
J
27:26John FoxeGUEST
Yeah, I mean, that's, you know, again, this goes to, uh, really fundamental issues in how we've organized our society, right? So we, we're all have to get r- we're, th- we have to embrace the world that we live in.
J
27:38John FoxeGUEST
And as the world moves towards a more tech-oriented, more education, services-oriented world, there's more emphasis on sitting in front of a computer, um, you know, reading, and so on.
J
27:51John FoxeGUEST
Uh, when I was growing up in Ireland, you know, a lot of young f- fellas, very bright guys, uh, left school much earlier to go into, to go home and work on their farm or to go into the trades and that.
J

So, and that was, that was kind of in, in, in some ways there was an outlet for people who didn't thrive in a school setting, right? They had, they would go off and become a carpenter or a plumber or something.
J
28:14John FoxeGUEST
Uh, that's not nearly as common these days, right? So, so these sort of natural environments that'll, that suit a, a person who doesn't have the, you know, that sort of hyper-concentrated ability to study the classics or whatever it happens to be.
How Is Screen Time Affecting My Kid?
J
11:50John FoxeGUEST
Yeah, so well, again, do they change with screen use? So what, what gets us back to that causality issue.
J
11:55John FoxeGUEST
So, so, for example, you know, some of the work that we, my own group, has done with the ABCD dataset is actually looking at gaming addiction.
J
12:04John FoxeGUEST
And, uh, so, so right, so, so lots and lots of kids, maybe all kids or close to all kids-... play video games, and for most of them, it's fine.
J
12:16John FoxeGUEST
And, uh, but there's a coterie of youngsters out there where it just jumps the shark, and they just can't not do it.
