John Bernard BuseGUEST
[outro jingle] Hi, I'm John Buse, a professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, uh, in the United States.

John Bernard BuseGUEST
But right now, um, I'm in Milan at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Congress, uh, where tomorrow, uh, we are presenting the new consensus statement from the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, uh, on the management of hyperglycemia in Type 2 diabetes.

John Bernard BuseGUEST
Uh, this process between the ADA and EASD has been going on, if I remember correctly, since two thousand and six, so twenty years.

John Bernard BuseGUEST
Um, and if any of you has an hour to pull these sort of every three-year documents up and see how the consensus has evolved, it's very interesting.

John Bernard BuseGUEST
But, uh, the last statement was in twenty twenty-two, and in some ways that was revolutionary in that we proposed, just suggested that maybe metformin didn't need to be the consensus first-line therapy, and that certainly the evidence suggested that GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors could be foundational therapies in the management of diabetes with the idea of providing more holistic care, uh, targeting both glucose reduction and weight reduction in all people with diabetes while still paying attention to cardiovascular risk reduction, uh, and the potential to have disease-modifying effects.
