Joe Brady

American football coach

Aug 18, 2026

3:28
It's just like, Oh, this is just another thing that some coach speak is going
3:31
down.
3:32
No, that's it.
3:32
Look, it's tough.
3:33
Right.
3:33
And that's, That's part of the thing that I have to spend a lot of time with and try to be intentional about.
3:37
Look, how are we going about it, right? If I just say it once and it's like, hey, this is what we're going to do and you never back it up or you don't consistently remind people or show the good, show the bad, I think it loses value, right? And so I think there's so many opportunities.
6:47
Has there been a decision or an instance that's come up in your short tenure as a head coach thus far that you weren't totally expecting for you to have to work on or go through when you first took this job?
28:12
And what parts did you find through the course of training camp in need of a little adjustment to get it where you want it?
28:18
Yeah, I think a lot of that's still to be determined.
28:21
And we spent a lot of time, I've had a lot of thoughts in my head through the years, right? And Um, we've spent a lot of time with the performance staff in the off season of, I said all along is like when we first started putting everything together, we started with the season in mind.
28:35
How are we going to practice? How are we going to do things? Then let's work to training camp.
28:39
Then let's work to the off season so that we're building and the guys have an expectation of what it's going to look like.
28:43
But it's really easy to put it on paper.
28:44
Then it's like, all right, now let's see what it actually is.

5 MINS LATER

33:52
It really looks like the opportunity
3:13
I mean, it's how just viewing Josh every day in practice, being a head coach, like how, how do you, what changes for you day to day? And also what's the, I mean, obviously relationship with Josh is so good, but what's the fine line between the relationship part of it and also trying to be a hard ass.
3:28
yeah i think well i mean as a head coach i try i'm i'm no different than i was as an offense quarter in terms of how i communicate with him or the guys but um yeah i i do i do believe in the relationship standpoint like i don't believe you can like demand excellence without being empathetic and understanding you know what makes guys tick um that doesn't make it you know it's like the old school mindset of like hey it's black and white we're gonna be a hard ass and then it's the player's coach that's soft and kind of i think you have to be able to have to be able to do both and know the guys in the pulse but You know, look, I've had a lot of fun with it, but I still am calling plays and I got to make sure that from an offense perspective, we're finding ways to continue to get better while also learning the defense and being around the guys.
4:08
I am still a step slow.
4:09
We do, if we throw an interception or something happens, it's not, I'm celebrating right away, but it's still, it's kicking in, but no, I got to celebrate with them because we're a part of it now.
4:20
Josh,
6:50
What are you expecting from this defense this year versus supposed to last year?
6:53
Yeah, to me, it's not about really comparing it to what it looked like last year.
6:59
And look, we haven't even put pads on right now.
3:15
I mean, obviously your relationship with Josh is so good, but what's the fine line between the relationship part of it and also trying to be a hardass?
3:21
Yeah, I think...
3:22
Well, I mean, as a head coach I try...
3:23
I'm, I'm no different than I was as an offense coordinator in terms of how I communicate with him or the guys.
3:28
But, um, yeah, I, I do, I do believe in the relationship standpoint.
3:32
Like, I don't believe you can, like, demand e- excellence without sh- being empathetic and understanding, you know, what makes guys tick.
3:38
Um, that doesn't make it, you know, it's like the old school mindset of, like, "Hey, it's black and white.
6:43
What are you expecting from this defense this year versus, opposed to last year?
1:44
If an alien came down and said, tell me to describe or describe to me a Joe Brady head coach training camp, how would you describe it?
1:52
Well, look, we're still trying to figure that out right now.
1:55
It's part of the part of the process is this this ramp up period.
1:58
And, you know, once pads come on, I hope that you kind of learn a little bit more about it.
2:03
But we've the Buffalo Bills, even as the offensive coordinator, we've been to I've been to this place, you know, but I'm trying to make it where with the mentality that we've never been here before.
2:13
Right.
2:13
And if we get into the mindset of like assuming how a training camp span or, you know, how the cafeteria has been, how the meetings, how everything's going to go, we're going to go back into training.

8 MINS LATER

10:44
But when it comes to Josh going through this process, bringing a life into the world, how has that affected what goes on here?
22:44
Uh, has it sort of exceeded expectations, or was this around about the time that you thought you might be able to, uh, have a decent go at it?
22:53
No, Scott, we feel like we've, uh, obviously used a number of different ways of, of building the list, and I think yeah, you're always looking for the growth in those players that maybe are 16 to kinda 26 on your list, and, um, maybe not your bonafide stars that everyone talks about.
23:08
And I think that's the growth you've probably seen, and you get those through the SSP or the role players that come onto your list, and then you see the growth in the, the likes of Warner, and you see the growth in the likes of Voss.
23:18
And, um, the role players that can come in, in Wagner and, and McDonald on your list, and they just become critical.
23:23
We obviously targeted a fair few WA boys in, in recent years as well, when you look at Lucky Jackson coming back, and Boltz, uh, and Jordie Clark, and they become really important from a specific role perspective.
23:34
So, um, we feel like the list is in a good place at the moment, but we think that there's still plenty of scope for growth.
23:40
Uh, and we'll keep looking at all the different options that we can use, and obviously it's gonna become really critical in the years to come with, with Tassie coming in.
27:17
How, how's he fitted in around the club, Mason?
15:46
But could the hunter become the hunted if Genco turns the tables on Diana? Here's Joe.
15:51
Well, thanks, Holly.
15:52
And that's right.
15:53
I'm back from New York City where there are two major events this week.
15:59
The 38th Annual Marine Money Week Conference and, of course, the big vote by Genco shareholders.
16:07
in the ongoing Diana shipping activists' attempt to control the company.
16:13
Marine Money covered a variety of topics, including, of course, war in Iran and the peace settlement that has been tabled.
18:38
Important to note, this does not mean that Diana is going away.
7:09
What was that day like for you?
7:10
Devastating.
7:11
Like, um, so, so let's take it back a day before, right? Well, two days before, right? We have the Denver game, and man, you're so confident going into that game and so excited, and you see that locker room and that, you know, like, so much of me as a head coach right now is with that locker room embedded in my brain, right? And seeing my quarterback at a press conference and seeing Dion Dawkins post-game and seeing those guys, like, um, the motivation that that gives me.
7:37
And then, you know, I'm, I was very fortunate for the head coaching interviews.
7:40
It's the reality of the timing of it all, but the next day, I'm doing head coaching interviews, and I remember driving home, and it's like, look, you know, you never know what's gonna happen, man.
7:48
But I love my, I love that I get to be the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills.
7:52
Like, you know, we'll see what, what goes with any of these, but you know, at least I get to be the coordinator here.

12 MINS LATER

20:22
How you, you know, personnel packages, all that kind of stuff, but what would you say is the biggest difference between that '22 offense under Brian and what, you know, maybe you ran against Denver a couple months ago?
14:15
What are the strongest signals you think operators should be paying attention to right now? Well, we
14:21
probably have to break that down into the different sectors.
14:24
So from a retail perspective, you have more data than ever.
14:28
And so how is an individual using your brand? And oftentimes the only really good way to study that is through a loyalty program.
14:39
and making sure that loyalty program circles back into your real estate decisions and obviously your marketing decisions and everything else.
14:47
But I think from a retail perspective, that's vitally important.
14:50
From an office perspective, really understanding where people work and why.

11 MINS LATER

26:26
So I'm curious, Joe, how are you thinking about AI or automation right now? I've been thinking a lot about
9:59
[laughs]
9:59
That's, that's what it is.
10:00
But I, I write it, so I originate the ideas, but it's not me saying, "Patrice, this is what you do." It's the goal of a good comic writer, I think, is to create a document that inspires the artist to tell the story.
10:12
So I'm, I'm not trying to create something final, I'm trying to create something that Patrice then takes to the next level.
10:18
So I'm trusting her to actually tell the story that I've kind of planted.
10:25
And in that process she needs to, she needs to argue with me-
11:30
It's, it's very positive.
11:32
I think this is our eighth or ninth festival like this, and they've been, each one has been bigger than the next one, and this is sort of a coming to fruition of the sort of plan of having a Phoenix Comicon where you walk in and every artist is there.
39:32
While not getting stuck in just being an offensive guy?
39:35
Yeah, no, and I think that was the important part of putting together the staff, right? Like, Pete Carmichael, everybody talks about, like, offensive head coach, you need your defensive coordinator, but that was so important by me getting Pete Carmichael as my offensive guy, right? He's a guy that's been this non-play calling offensive coordinator for so many years that while I'm on the sideline, I'm not just focused strictly on offense, and when defense is on the field, I can be the head coach, right? And so having a guy that I can lean on throughout the games, that's gonna be critical for me.
40:35
How do you, like, kind of view the going into the season with your offense on how you build from last year into next year?
40:40
Well, I think you, you think about offense, but you're really studying all the defenses across the league, right? Like, we're just trying to break all their rules, right? And everybody's studying...
40:47
If you're just studying the offenses across the league, I think, um, you're, you're picking up some things, but you're not beating what the rest of the league is kinda...
40:54
It's all, it all ends up being in a circle, right? We all end up running the same plays and what, what everybody was running five years ago, and everybody found the beaters.
41:01
You know, fi- in 10 years, everybody's gonna running, running those defenses again and, and whatnot.
41:05
So I study a lot of, I spend a lot of time studying the defenses, just trying to break their rules.
19:07
What did you, give me an insight, give us an insight as to your conversations with Drew Terrell, your new wide receivers coach, what you expect of him, what he expected, and some of the stuff he told you coming in.
19:18
Yeah, well, first, you're going through the whole process and you talk with a lot of coaches.
19:23
This was before even being the head football coach here.
19:25
You're just, you're trying to get a feel like, hey, who are some guys that you own other staffs? You know, when you're watching other teams play, you see how, you know, a defensive back group works and you're like, oh, you know what? who's Jim Leonard, you know, those types of things.
19:38
Well, a lot of people were bringing up Drew to me and I talked with Drew the first time he wants, he wanted to coach quarterbacks.
19:46
Like he, he's a guy at Stanford, extremely bright, you know, and he's been in the QB room, but there's something so valuable about a guy that coaches wide receivers, but as they also can teach them from a quarterback's perspective.
19:58
Right.
22:55
How big an upheaval are we looking at on that side of the ball?
4:05
I'm curious, how do you envision your working relationship, and how would you describe the dynamic between you and Brandon Beane since he was promoted to GM and, or from GM to president of football ops?
4:16
Yeah, well, look, it's, it's unique, right? 'Cause I've been in the building.
4:19
Um, I've had an opportunity...
4:20
This, you know, a lot of times, right, you see those guys in the press conference, and, uh, they might have had a couple Zoom interviews, and then they met each other in person, and they've talked, and now they're working together, and, you know, what does that dynamic look like? And, um, fortunately, I've had four years of being able to go into his office, communicate with him, talk, uh, you know, understand how he communicates, how he, how he sees a team, I mean, see a part of, you know, be a part of all of this.
4:43
So it's, it's a unique perspective, and it's a little different than, you know, uh, a lot of other opportunities.
4:49
And, um, I know how, you know, great of a communicator he is, and I know, uh, he doesn't have an ego.
4:55
And so, you know, people always talk about the alignment, and I really believe that it has nothing to do with, like, we both are gonna agree on everything all the time.
8:44
What do you love about Keon Coleman, and what do you expect from him going forward?
32:59
What made it so intense, this one in particular?
33:04
Well, thank you, by the way.
33:06
I wish I could tell you that that was just like a press conference talk or – that was real.
33:13
Like that is so real.
33:14
Um, look, I didn't know what I was walking into a full transparency.
33:18
Like I didn't know how, was this going to be a, Hey, uh, they're just, they're just, it says, check the box.
33:24
He's the in-house candidate, you know? Um, and then once it started, I thought, I thought, you know, Brandon obviously started and did an incredible job of like, we're going to exactly like you said, we're going to treat it like we don't know you.
34:36
But what does that mean? What did that mean, that CEO thing? Why do you think they were like, oh, yeah, you are going to be able to go up and put more under your umbrella?
9:32
How do you describe it?
9:34
Yeah, it's, it's, it's...
9:35
Honestly, it's hard to kind of put into words.
9:36
And, um, like, my, my...
9:39
He's the best, he's the best in the game, right? And we're, we're all good coaches when we coach good players.
9:44
I'm understanding of that.
9:45
But he's, he's helped elevate, uh, he's changed how I coach, he's changed, uh, the mindsets, um, um, and the, the, the way that I go about when I prepare, and, uh, the confidence I go into in games.
11:42
How will things potentially be different now that you have the final say on everything, Joe Brady?
91:30
What is the conversation? What is the interview like, and what do they not know about you, maybe, uh, that they learn in that interview process that make you think that you could be the head guy?
91:38
guy?...
91:39
Well, I think, look, the, the biggest thing is, is there's a, there's a complete difference of just calling plays and then running a, running an organization, and, uh, understanding how to, how to lead a group of men.
91:49
I'm not the offensive coordinator anymore, you know? And making sure that I, I understand how to communicate with the defensive guys and have a vision for what I want, what I want that to look like with our special teams, and what's it gonna look like standing in front of a room.
91:59
And, um, look, they put me through the wringer, you know? And, and, uh, and look, we gotta grow our offense, so it's, it's not one of those things where it's just like, "Hey, offense, check.
92:07
Let's keep it moving." And, uh, you know, and just making sure that they, they allowed me the opportunity to kind of talk about my vision, um, you know, and everything that we do.
92:14
And look, Josh didn't toss me any alley-oops.

12 MINS LATER

104:00
... take one of these jobs where, you know, you're probably gonna be looking for something else in a few years, but do you feel like now you are way more prepared than you were maybe when you were the OC in Carolina or coming out of LSU? Like, why do you feel like now is the right time, and how, how, how much do you feel like you've learned in these last several years of calling plays and being the OC?
