So just to get things kicked off here, um, uh, I was wondering if you, you could share with us and our listeners what clinical problem you were most trying to solve with this trial, and why did PENG block seem to be an attractive candidate for hip arthroscopy?

So, um, the main clinical problem we were trying to address was, uh, one that anyone who looks after hip arthroscopy patients will recognize, that the pain after these procedures can be quite substantial, and yet we're doing them as day surgery procedures.

Um, patients go home within hours, and yet they have significant pain and opioid s- related side effects that can be a com- common reason for delayed discharge.

So an ideal analgesic intervention like a block would reduce the pain and opioid requirements while, uh, preserving function.

Um, so the PENG block that was originally described by our co-author, author Laura was super attractive because it was introduced as a motor-sparing block that could target articular branches to the anterior hip capsule, which is thought to be an important pain generator in hip pathology.

Um, the appeal was a trifecta of reduced pain and opioid consumption, motor sparing, and a downstream benefit of faster, safer discharge because in theory, it provided a w- it offered a way to provide meaningful analgesia without the downside of quadricep weakness that can be seen with other regional techniques.

Do, like, do, do you think that, um, the pain block doesn't, like, cover the main, uh, pain generators with hi- hip arthroscopies? And I think you get into this in the discussion, but I, I would love just to hear maybe, like, a, a high-level summary of that, of, of what's going on here.
