What can cooperatives, I think I know the answer to this one, but what can cooperatives today learn from the way she treated food, housing, work, and dignity as connected concerns?
35:06
I think first of all, we've gotta get back to seeing those connections and seeing how important co-op ecosystems are so that I think we're ready now to not just say, "Let's do one co-op," but to talk about how do we develop co-op ecosystems.
35:26
And I, you know, I can give you one example of what's happening today that's similar but different, right? Um, ChiFresh Kitchen in Chicago and their new nonprofit called BOLTS, and I forget what BOLTS stands for.
35:43
Um, but that's a fantastic ecosystem model, an urban model in this case.
35:49
Um, and what they're doing is they started out with a food prep worker co-op, uh, whose, uh, member owners are mostly previously incarcerated people and women.

What does her induction mean to you personally as a scholar of Black cooperative history and a Hall of Famer yourself?

But the work of people like you and hopefully the work of our studios is to actually elevate and not let this cultural rager happen, but actually celebrate the real heroes whose ideas and whose organizations really move the world forward.
16:19
When we talk about enslavement, I'd like to start by talking about the Underground Railroad.
16:26
We've kind of, you know, thought about our heroes, Harriet Tubman and things like that.

Rostam ZafariHOST
Like, how do we dispel these kinds of myths to get people to actually see what cooperatives are truly about, which is bringing power back to communities?
