We are looking at how project managers choose the right response, build enough trust to move forward, and stay realistic without becoming the project doom announcer.
2:00
Well, in any case, uh, you always have to assess and investigate the risk, but how you do it and how fast depends on what the urgency is, of course.
2:09
But then there's these micro risks that, uh, to me are more insidious, and those are those urgent on-the-fly risks.
2:16
And that's observe, orient, decide, and act, and that was created by Colonel John Boyd, and I call it risk assessment at high speed.
3:38
That's the pressure cooker that we live in, and you just have to figure out with the team how are you gonna deal with it when it shows up.
3:46
I say it's the more I plan, the luckier I get.
3:49
And, you know, likewise, um, another, uh, one I heard was, uh, Roy Disney, who was Walt's nephew, said, "When values are clear, decisions are easy." So if we combine these two, if we look at proper planning and clear values, then this art of when to go full speed ahead becomes a bit easier.
4:06
Uh, so, you know, there's just... you know, throwing it over the fence doesn't mean you're absolved of it.
28:18
Um, uh, so Jerry, um, why did you choose to go with Star Wars? What made it a good lesson for you in project management?
28:35
Well, it's funny.
28:36
It started out as a happy accident.
28:37
[laughs] I had a couple coasters that I picked up just for fun from...
28:41
They were Star Wars coasters, and one of them had, uh, the, this saying, "Never tell me the odds," which I always loved anyway, and the other one said, "I have a bad feeling about this," which was also something used throughout the whole Star Wars canon.
28:54
Um, and I thought, "Wow, that's interesting.
28:56
Two completely different perspectives," and it was a lesson in risk management.
