What do you think your life would be like now? What do you think it would look like if you didn't get fired? Oh,
25:58
man.
26:00
If I hadn't taken this job, if I hadn't taken this chance, I would still just be... living at my parents' place, just licking my wounds, wondering what life would have been like.
26:12
I mean, yeah, I was just, I was just so mad at the world and myself when I was, when I was 25, graduated from pharmacy school.
26:24
But I had just, I had, I'll say it this way.
26:29
I had taken some misguided advice about conflict resolution to say, oh, well, you know, you're better off being trampled on than to trample over someone.
26:38
And that advice, for some reason, the person who challenged me with that thought didn't uh you know thought it meant well but at the end of the day it doesn't look good when you have a pharmacist just saying yes to everybody especially when they want to get early refills on their pain medication and they're when people are now tell people are telling me to grow a pair because they're like you need to stand up for your license you need to stand up for yourself and and compliance like why aren't you doing this and so you see this cognitive dissonance of Oh, well, be a nice person.

Uh, how can, uh, leaders give, uh, honest feedback without damaging relationships?
19:33
So here's [laughs] here's, here's two schools of thought, and I thought I agree with one more than the other, but it's, uh, it's, it-- I'll let, I'll let the, the audience decide which one they prefer to use.
19:47
So one form of confrontation or, or honest feedback in this case is what's called the, what some affectionately call the crap sandwich.
19:57
[laughs] And first you start off by reassuring them, "Hey, you matter so much.
20:02
That's why we're talking." You offer them, "Hey, this is what we have to address because you care-- we care so much," and then you end it with reassurance and say, "Hey, you know, here, and, and let's talk through solutions, but at the end of the day, we want you here, so just do better next time." And initially, I remember thinking to myself, "I don't like this." But then I found myself doing it more often than I wanted to admit.
20:28
Uh, the second form of feedback is real-time feedback.
20:33
Whether it's good feedback or tough feedback, um, learn to be intentional to address it in the moment.
