Help me understand that, because I, I, I know we've talked about mitochondria before, but for those that didn't listen to that original episode or wanna go a little deeper, can you just give us like a high level of what that means and maybe where that differs or maybe it doesn't with internal versus what we see on our skin?

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
They're sort of lovingly called the powerhouse of the cell, and I think that's a little bit actually of a misnomer because they...

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
So powerhouse because they're generating the energy that your cells need.

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
So whether it is a brain cell, a skin cell, or a muscle cell, they need energy to do their jobs.

There's a marketing conversation around it, but not a conversation around the health of it.

And so I guess from your angle, what do you think, like, the science is telling us around why we age, how we can age better? Like, what is the, the story there?

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
Well, I think, you know, Bryan Johnson's journey is really fascinating, and he's taking longevity sort of to another level.

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
And, you know, he's, he's very lucky that he has a lot of tools at his disposal, which most of us don't have.

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
Um, but You know, what's interesting is he is actually looking at the science, the biology of aging, and we're in this really incredible space right now where science has unlocked, they call them these 12 hallmarks of aging.

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
And what they really simply are, they're cellular processes, biological processes where you can basically accelerate these hallmarks and accelerate aging.

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
So I think a great example of that is we know that smoking will accelerate the aging process.

Jeff SandersHOST
But what do you think are kind of our biggest opportunities every day to, to fight the aging process in a more kind of down to earth way and less of the on the mountaintop kind of way that he has?
122: The Cellular Reason Your Body Feels Different After 30 with Jennifer Scheinman

And what is happening is, I, I mean, under the hood, things are actually happening that are contributing to how we feel every day.

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
Science has, has labeled these 12 hallmarks of aging, which are basically these biological pathways that are things that can actually be studied and can be, there can be interventions for in the lab, and these are what are driving our cells to age.

Jennifer ScheinmanGUEST
And two of those particularly that I think play a role in just, like, the energy slump that we start to feel as we get older are mitochondrial decline and then this decline in the ability to recycle our mitochondria as well, and we can talk a little bit more about that.

So can you talk to us about do we naturally produce this? Who doesn't? Why we would wanna supplement with it, and then we'll talk maybe into the nutrition and about it afterwards.
