1:05
You were not an isolated incident in this situation.
1:09
Yes, exactly.
1:10
So I did some research.
1:14
I went on Reddit.
1:17
Coincidentally, one of the messages that she sent me had a screenshot of a post from Reddit.
1:27
And it said, I know you've talked to this person and their application was denied.
1:39
And I was like, okay, whatever.

Once you have this group of people, what were your next steps to full on investigate this person and stop her?
4:57
So I guess to start, just tell us about you and your drinking and what it looked like.
5:05
So I started drinking when I was 15.
5:08
Got busted the first time I drank with my friends, telling my other good friend about the night before, and my dad, who worked graveyards, thought he was sleeping, was not sleeping, overheard me, and got busted.
5:20
So I don't think I drank for like the rest of that year.
5:22
That was my sophomore year.
5:23
And then I was also very, like, shy.
5:26
I wasn't super social.
28:21
She was affecting your daily life.
28:24
Yeah, I was very, very defeated.
28:28
I was extremely defeated.
28:31
I felt like, I don't know, like I had this sense of hope when I went there because I thought, "This will make her leave me alone." And then it was completely just shot down, and I just felt defeated.
28:48
So my next steps were trying to figure out if sh- it was legal that she was working in Massachusetts.
28:56
So I, uh, went online.
28:58
I found who issues the Massachusetts licensings, and I called them.
32:28
Can you tell us about that?
ReneeHOST
10:56
Okay, there you get your stink.
10:58
Um, uh, and yeah, so, uh, Caveaiola, it means the, the little violet house.
ReneeHOST
11:26
And it's like, oh.
11:26
And I was trying to figure out, 'cause when you initially went to France, I was like, because where this is located in Piemonte, France is right there.
MattGUEST
8:02
Um-
8:03
Well, and, and I'd say, like, the other thing is that you go into the location, right, where we got our credentials, and they have got a picture.
8:10
Everything's in Spanish, right? They've got a, you can't bring this, you c- you know, you...
8:14
What there is allowed.
8:15
But it's not, it's not organized.
8:17
It's not like there's a list of these are all the things that you could drop off, or this is where you would buy the things, or this is what you can't drop off.
8:25
It feels, l- like you're saying, arbitrary.

I was not back on my heels, I was forward.
42:51
And it, it's a little bit of a misnote or a misstatement for me to say I didn't talk to my husband about it at all.
42:57
I didn't talk to him about it before signing up, because I knew, um, that I had, I had some money that was just mine that I could do with what I wanted, and I was willing to do that.
43:10
But when I did talk to him, what I said was, "If I could pay the weight loss fairy this amount of money and wake up tomorrow in the body of my dreams, I would do it.
43:24
I would not hesitate.
43:25
I would be throwing the money at the weight loss fairy." And if I'm willing to pay for the result, I just have to understand that it's not a free lunch, right? Like, I am gonna have to do the work, but I'm willing to pay for the result.
43:41
And I also looked at it as when I started the program, I was 49.

67:57
That'll be fun.
67:58
Um, and then every...
67:59
We're doing all sorts of celebrations for the 20th anniversary.
68:02
So like for the first thousand customers that come through this year, we give a free Crazy Daisy to everybody.
68:07
We're raffling off a 10-inch hanging basket every week the month of May.
CodyHOST
68:18
Yeah.
68:19
Um, so every, every month we're doing something a little different to just kind of give back, um, in appreciation for the 20 years of supporting us and doing, you know, coming up, coming up there.
DianeHOST
5:18
Copper, yep.
5:19
Superior is a big copper mining town.
5:22
And from Superior you can head south on the 77 through what we call the Copper Corridor and visit some of our other little towns in Pinal like Kearny, uh, Winkelman, Mammoth, San Manuel, Oracle, and they all have some relation.
5:38
Uh, Kearny has a big copper mine there as well.
5:43
Um, and they're all little mining towns that you kinda travel through.
5:47
And then that takes you, you finish, uh, you, you meet up with the 79, uh, literally just about a mile north of the Pinal County-Pima County border, and it's actually Tucson.
6:00
So they're part of Tucson, what we call the census-designated place of Tucson. That is in Pinal County and nobody ever knows that until you-

Hey, good
33:34
... fir- serious time trying to quit drinking, but it wasn't successful, right? So but when I was out here with Brad, I, I didn't drink at all, but my God, like, the, it was, it was just the way I, I...
33:46
It was so, I had s- so high anxiety because I wanted to drink, but I didn't want to, and he was-
37:22
... is, is fucking unreal.
37:23
Yeah.
37:24
I, I believe...
37:25
I m- that's my biggest regret.
37:28
I know...
3:58
Is that right?
3:59
That's correct.
4:00
It was August 5th, 2005, and it was a full moon.
4:08
And we were traveling from Brookings to Sun River, Oregon.
4:14
And we decided to go after work, so it was rather late.
4:18
It, it was around midnight.
4:21
And we had rented a Lincoln Town Car so we could get the wedding dress and the tuxedos and the groceries and things, um, in the car.

35 MINS LATER

39:50
Do you remember what size and, and color it was?
63:25
Well, where are you, where are you right now, and what's your story? Why, how did you find us?
63:29
So I live in Grover Beach on the Central Coast.
63:33
Um, I kind of ran just different parts of my life, like, just go out and start running.
63:43
Um, when I was in college, I did do the Bay to Breakers in San Francisco-
63:49
Yeah
63:49
... which is another very, uh, interesting race.
63:53
Um, some people run it naked.
63:55
Um, so I'm used to kind of some wi- wildness [laughs] in running.

22:11
My mom was in the foster system, and then she married my dad to become, I guess, legally an adult and not be in the foster system anymore, and then they had me a year later.
22:25
Um, but I think there was some heavy drug use and just some immaturity.
22:30
And so I actually was born in Portland, Oregon.
22:32
I think my father flew me to Alabama, left me with some family who were also alcoholics, and, um, I had this one Jesus-loving grandmother in all of the world [chuckles] that was my world who actually ended up getting custody of me and raising me.
speaker_3CORRESPONDENT
23:06
She describes what her childhood was like.
23:08
Chaos.
23:09
There was a lot of boyfriends and drinking and sneaking out of the house.
5:25
So these different things that you've tried out, is it mainly, "Hey, I want something to do?" Is it mainly financial? Is it a little of both? How do you look at-
5:35
It's a little of both.
5:36
It's definitely a little of both.
5:38
So I want my money.
5:40
I don't wanna lose money.
5:41
I want my money to grow.
5:43
But the thing about being retired too at my age, I'm 57 years old, is I'm too young to be retired, to be honest with you.

5 MINS LATER

11:07
... creative, uh, you are a creative hustler.
speaker_13UNKNOWN
29:11
Yeah.
29:12
I guess the only bad thing that happened was it was kinda rude and weird of him to eat some of my food that I ordered.
29:21
Like, I know he was offering, but-
speaker_13UNKNOWN
29:40
Cool
29:40
...
29:40
I didn't really want any of what he ordered for himself, so he, he ended up eating all of his food and basically half of mine.
speaker_19UNKNOWN
33:21
Yeah.
33:22
I guess the only bad thing that happened was it was kinda rude and weird of him to eat some of my food that I ordered.
33:31
Like, I know he was offering, but-
speaker_7UNKNOWN
34:56
[laughs] What, no, what was it?
34:58
I mean, he kept talking about how he's not into the casual dating scene, and he wants to have something really serious and wants to find his soulmate.
35:07
Meanwhile-
54:24
... growing up with your one sibling?
54:27
Right.
54:27
Yeah.
54:28
We did.
54:28
And, um, the home life was tumultuous. For sure.
54:34
Uh, parents divorced.
54:36
They should have.

15 MINS LATER

69:12
And, and then they had you.
21:21
That is until one day in 2007, when the deeply painful memories from May 27th, 1984 came flooding back for Jennifer.
21:32
I was working in healthcare, and we were getting ready for shift change, and I was preparing my report.
21:36
And we had a big, long table in the department, and there was a TV right there.
21:41
And I was on a computer, and I hear, "Jenny," Kristi's mom, "If anyone has any information about the disappearance of, of my daughter, please come forward." And I- Yeah, she would come out every year on the anniversary, and they would air something ...
21:54
And it was like lightning went through my body.
21:57
It was like lightning went through my body, and I knew I had to say something.
22:00
I didn't know if anything that I told them would be helpful.
24:03
But he never did.
40:45
Wow.
40:46
Um, yeah, and it wasn't like a, you know, a voice, you know, from behind me or around me or even like a, a different voice in my head.
40:58
It was, it was like my...
41:02
It, it, it felt like it wasn't my own thought.
41:06
Um, and a- at this particular time, [clears throat] excuse me, um, I was just kind of coming out of a challenging time in my life, um, kinda coming out of some postpartum depression and anxiety, and I had been doing a lot of, um, you know, self-reflection, self-help kinda stuff.
41:29
And so I was really trying to lean into my intuition and, um, you know, personal power.
41:36
So when I heard, "Keep talking to this man.
46:07
You did have one other story, right? One little story, correct?
110:58
Did you guys have a, a, a goal of, "We're gonna do this in under two years," or was this just, you guys went so hard you didn't realize it?
111:04
Um, we watched the video, and any time that I would make a bad decision, he would remind me, he would say, "Cheetah," and I would have to stop.
111:12
[laughs]
111:21
Cheetah!
111:22
Cheetah, and I would, I'd know what he was talking about, and I'd have to refocus.

3:01
So Jennifer, when did you start to notice that Ethan might be different from other kids?
3:06
It was pretty obvious right away.
3:08
First of all, you know, he was my third and fourth, so it was a twin.
3:11
He was just so flat and helpless that I thought he was gonna, you know, die in his sleep.
3:18
So I had one twin in the bedroom and one twin next to my bed.
3:22
It's like you just know something's not right.
3:25
He never tried to eat, never...
3:57
How did that change you just to meet him [laughs] for the first time?
3:58
How did that change you just to meet him [chuckles] for the first time?
4:02
I was shocked, and I felt terrible 'cause I really treated him sorta like my baby.
4:06
Took him to speech therapy.
4:07
I took him to OT.
4:08
I tried to, of course, get him to talk.
4:10
But when it didn't happen, I was like, "I'm okay with this.
4:14
He's my baby, and he's with me." And everyone, you know, acts like, "Oh, we knew he was so smart." We didn't really know he was so smart.

12:30
How has all of this changed you?
23:04
So is Sabrina.
23:06
And when we were hanging out at his house, he wasn't, like, hanging out with us.
23:10
If we were in the main living room or family room, he would be in the other room or back in his bedroom.
1:19
This, this just doesn't sound right.
1:21
We waited 24 hours, and then we went to the police.
1:24
We said, "She's missing.
1:25
Something happened," and they just didn't believe us.
1:27
[suspenseful music]

34 MINS LATER

36:09
They'd gone to report a missing person, their friend Sabrina.
36:14
We had to go downtown.
36:16
We had to wait.
2:40
We begin with Jennifer.
2:45
As a parent, you always wanna protect your kids.
2:49
Looking back, maybe, you know, it is best to just be forthcoming and not try to protect them.
2:57
[upbeat music] When we first bought the house, um, I was aware that there had been a death at the home because my husband actually went to school with the young lady that, that passed away there, Libby.
3:18
They were friends, and he would go pick her up at her house, which became our house, and they were close for a while.
3:26
I did feel a little hesitant to move in because of the story he had told me.
3:32
He was aware that she had passed, and there was always something kind of mysterious about her death.

And then...
109:44
Mm-hmm.
109:45
Uh, then I, uh, was, you know, working on the different repairs-Um, for the house, saving up that fund.
109:54
And got to last summer, and construction prices were just through the roof.
109:58
They were ridiculous, wanting 60, $70,000 to rebuild a porch, or $100,000 for 18 windows.
110:04
It was ridiculous.
110:05
And I felt like I wasn't making progress, so I, I asked the Lord, I'm like, "What do I do? Like, I've got all this money saved." And he said, "Pay off the house in one year." And my jaw dropped on the floor, 'cause at that time, my mortgage balance was about 145,000.
112:21
Wow.
112:22
Um, but it was done.
