Who Killed the Black Dahlia? Filmmakers Say They Know and Need Your Help Proving It

Uh, but we were literally pulled into this, um, shortly after I had directed a film and one of my actors had introduced me, uh, to a son of one of the lead investigators on the case, and he shared some information with us that, uh, was just mind-blowing, because I kept on saying, "Why is this gentleman sharing this with me out of all people in the world?" You know, how did this end up on my desk and not somebody else's? Um, we would later vet it and look at it, study it, and research it, and find out it was a piece of information that nobody knew about this case.

So then it became a matter of if you're trusted with a piece of information in regards to a cold case, what do you possibly do? Uh, Kim and I were filmmakers, not investigators, so we decided to go out there and sort of enlist this all s- uh, all-star group of individuals that are either current or former law enforcement officials with backgrounds anywhere from homicide to cold case.

So we made a promise at the very beginning that we would conduct this not like a documentary shoot, not like a docuseries shoot, but like an actual real live investigation.

In regards to the autopsy report and why it's so important is that, um, the autopsy report has never really been seen.

16:59When you received these files, did you ask why you were getting them now and why these weren't given to another investigative group?
J

Sometimes I tried not to ask too many questions and was just really thankful for it.

In the case of the one, uh, situation to where it was another investigative agency from LA, I just said, "Thank you very much." But I did scratch my head and said, "That's interesting that you had so many files for another investigative [laughs] agency." So that was sort of interesting, but thank God they were preserved.

Uh, in some of the other instances, we did track down different family members because, uh, the suspect that we decided to focus on and dig really, really hard into, and then we made the commitment that let's start deconstructing this individual and see how far we get.
