So, okay, Jeff, before anything else, Jeff, could you tell us why are you the guy that I called for this one? Who are you and what do you do?
J
10:02Jeff BanksGUEST
Yeah, that's a, [laughs] that's a tricky one to answer, but, you know, starting with my background, like I'm an avalanche survivor, and I've also lost 15 friends and colleagues to avalanches, and all these folks were super experts.
J
10:14Jeff BanksGUEST
And I know you have a personal connection to this tragedy, and I just wanna reach out or just send out love and kindness to everyone involved with this tragedy.
J
10:25Jeff BanksGUEST
I guess my passion is for avalanche prevention and making sure that folks can have a long and adventurous life in the backcountry and come home safely at the end of the day to their families.
J

For me, being in the backcountry is my favorite thing, sharing that with family and friends for the last 35 years, 20-plus years professionally teaching avalanche courses to everybody from mountain guides, IFMGA guides in Europe, to, used to be on the instructor team for the American Mountain Guides Association, so I would instruct and examine new mountain guides, as well as worked a lot with the Special Forces Mountain Guide Team out of Fort Carson in Colorado Springs.

And then just people in the public, just like our listeners, families and friends who put together an avalanche course, and they're like, "Hey, Jeff, we'd like to teach, you to teach us." So I think from my perspective, I realized I could have a bigger impact if I shifted from day-to-day guiding and instructing, and so we founded an avalanche safety app, and it's based on prevention.

So what we're doing is looking at the big picture on a nationwide scale and looking at statistics, and we've got pretty good records for about 13, 14 years from most of the avi centers.
