Jeff Acker

Mayor of Spruce Grove

Oct 26, 2026

3:20
Jeff Acker, mayor of Swiss Grove, said it was great to see his team recognized in this manner.
3:25
This means the world to us on council.
3:27
We see this every single day and to see the recognition from the association.
3:31
We work with these folks every single day and we know they pour their heart into our community.
3:36
They are true servant leaders that have inspired not only our staff but our community and it's a joy every single time that we get together with these folks to make tough decisions and challenging decisions in our community and we are just tremendously proud.
3:51
It's done the world of good for this council and I think the entire team back home.
2:10
Was there anything in that bear pit session or so far in your first day talking to mayors and councillors that you've been surprised to hear about?
2:18
Nothing shocking.
2:19
I think we're all facing the same challenges, same opportunities.
2:22
I think it was nice to hear from the ministers and there's some opportunity for some new perhaps financing tools in the toolbox that we're going to be looking at through the Ministers Council.
2:30
Great to hear Minister Williams provide us that $75,000 to get us started on one of our main projects.
2:36
priorities, which is that infrastructure prioritization framework, which I think is going to be really beneficial not only for us as mid-sized cities, but to the province to identify where we need to be doing those investments.
2:46
So really happy with the conversation so far.
4:04
So how important is it to have that action item for all 25 members to go away and bring back to their communities?
16:40
Are you expecting data centers to be a discussion of importance at this year's MCMC in Red Deer? Well,
16:48
I think it will.
16:49
You're seeing a lot of those investments going into more of the rural communities.
16:52
Land is a little cheaper.
16:54
So midsize cities, they may have a role, but I wouldn't expect you see the big giga centers or those types of announcements when you're paying, you know, urban cost of land per acre.
17:04
But those discussions have to happen.
17:05
And, you know, we control kind of the land use piece, the setbacks, you know, ensuring that one property doesn't affect their neighbors.

23:49
So give us some insight into the shift that's happened from a shareholder's point of view.
23:53
Sure.
23:54
So I think early days we set up, you know, some key sectors we wanted to target and then it became very rigid.
24:01
And then the organization and the board of directors kind of focused on that direction.
24:06
But meanwhile, we're getting pressures from our communities, from our residents, from our EDO officers that are in our community saying this isn't matching the priorities that council has asked us to do or we can't attract.
24:17
It's not on the list of everything global.
24:20
So we had a disconnect there and it was other communities that had the same kind of disconnect.
