And so can you tell us a little bit about the organization and the programs that you operate that so deeply and importantly support youth who are struggling with that sense of disconnection and that longing for community?

Before I talk about our work, I want to talk about what connects me to this work.

And when I talk about our work, I talk about there are three things that keep the young people we serve and their families at the forefront of my consciousness every single day.

The first is the pain in their voices when they call us.

Most of the young people reach out late at night when their house is quiet and their fear is loudest.

And in those moments, they are usually desperate to find anyone who will remind them that their life is worth living.

The second thing is the grief in a parent's voice after losing a child.

But can you tell us a little bit more about some of the factors that you have found in your work, in your research that contribute to an increased risk? And also maybe some of the factors that protect us from symptoms of psychological distress.

I use they, she, and he pronouns, and I have the honor of leading The Trevor Project and the privilege of being a part of the movement to end suicide for LGBTQ+ young people.
