But if I can ask, what was your mindset in that moment when somebody calls you to tell you that there's a plane crash that's intimate with over 300 people on board? what goes through your mind? What went through your mind?
4:13
It was very sobering.
4:15
You think about the fact that you know that 300 people are alive right now that in a very short period of time are not going to be.
4:25
And it became very quiet.
4:28
None of us had anything to say to each other to really felt important in that moment enough to break the silence.
4:37
We turned on the news and it was a while before the local stations picked up on the story.
4:43
So we sat there for probably 10 minutes before they broke in with the story.

14 MINS LATER

16:15
Give us the connection between integrity and presence.
16:21
Number one, I built these almost like a foundation to a leadership strategy.
16:29
You can't have presence without integrity.
16:33
You have to first know who you are.
16:35
You have to be able to show up as the person you are.
16:39
But then you have to show up.
16:41
You can't just say, I've got integrity and do whatever you want.

28 MINS LATER

45:07
in a
14:53
That's a very
14:54
good question.
14:55
That leads me back to when I first started into the funeral business.
15:00
I worked for a funeral home in rural Iowa.
15:02
There were two funeral directors that worked there, the owner and then the former owner.
15:06
The former owner, when I met him, was 85 years old.
15:10
Wonderful gentleman, very well grounded.

11 MINS LATER

25:56
So the prescription from that book, like, what do they what do they see is the prescription? Like, how do we fix this? How do we address this problem? Or like, what do you believe is required for us to do in order to?
24:55
Yeah.
24:55
And I was really fortunate when I started in funeral service, I, I had two wonderful mentors, uh, and there was a very good contrast, a very odd di- dichotomy in, in the two gentlemen.
25:07
They were both at the funeral home I was working at.
25:09
Mr. Bickford was 85 years old when I met him, and I think he had license number two in the state of Iowa, but he was the same in every single environment, whether it was working in the funeral home, in his church, with his family, in the community.
25:26
He was always this rock solid person that, that had... was full of integrity, full of compassion, um, just very wise person.
25:36
And on the flip side, the owner of the funeral home was 27 years old.
25:40
He was very good at work, and he was very good at teaching me what I needed to know about funeral service, but as soon as he punched out at night, his life was completely different.
30:12
Yeah.
