Jay knew yet another side of Daryl, the Daryl who lived alone into his 90s and looked forward to seeing this young guy in his life who'd come by and ask to listen to his old tapes or to see his rock collection.

It, it felt good to have, um, somebody who had a shared interest that wasn't necessarily around my age.

It was this deeper feeling of, like, acceptance and importance.

Um, and I always enjoyed whenever he would talk about, um, any old music that he knew and any old, um, rocks that he had found.

This is an old cassette carrier that he had.

Um, but this row is stuff that I have collected.

Um, but this whole row is his collection.

Why were you too scared?

His uncle is a missing person.

The moment we met, and obviously I knew your story from the media, like most people, I think the moment I met you and Chris, I thought exactly what most people think, like, "How can I help?"

Mm.

And then my grandpop, how it affected him.

Mum said to me when I was much older that she reckons losing her brother, and her dad losing her son-

What was it like at the end? How much were you drinking? Maybe a rock bottom moment.

Jail.

A lot of jail is what it was like in the end.

I had, I had a fourth DUI, and I got a drug possession, and I just kept going to jail because they put a SCRAM monitor on my ankle, and I could not stay sober.

I could not not drink.

I didn't know how to not drink, so they just kept putting me in jail.

So I was just isolated, alone, and my whole story is just, that's a lot in a minute.

Did you guys follow a similar trajectory, maybe try to quit drinking alone or try to do this alone, and was that successful, or when did you open up for community? And I know you did because look where we're at right now.

Yep.

Um, and we toured with them, and then I felt the same thing.

I was seeing the change in the, sort of the scene go from, like, you know, we used to kind of be...

Like, we were that headlining band that was doing really well, and now it's like, oh, we're fading off, and, like, Dead & Divine and, like, same with the...

Like, after the show, everyone's buying Dead & Divine merch.

Like, we'd sell a bit, but we'd do okay still, but it wa- you could tell, like, it was switching into that heavier style music.

Mm-hmm.

Um, so that, like, there was collaboration, but a lot of it was kind of, like, me coming to the band with a song and, like, fixing up some parts.

He is the brewmeister.

I guess, I guess so.

It's, it's amazing.

Tell us about that 'cause, 'cause I think this is a funny story.

Well, we, we, we... [laughs] So to back it up, we, we met some new friends online and we met them and, um, just had a drink and got to know them a little bit.

And then because of scheduling, we weren't able to see them for quite some time, like i- it was almost a month and a half.

And, um, they...

We went to their place and I, I was like, "Oh, I, I, I need to bring something." They...

Well, because they said they were gonna, um, bring whatever...

It was one of those bring whatever you want.

Life

Yeah.

And so for years at that point, I'm, all I'm doing, I'm living on this Reddit, uh, subreddit called, uh, Hot Wife Lifestyle, and it's just people explaining their stories, their first times, like w- how they got into it, all these things.

And I, I lived on that thing for years, just every day reading stories.

And, uh, I started bringing it up to her, like, "Hey, babe, what would you think about, you know, adding a guy in and you fucking them?" And of course she was, "Hard no.

Absolutely not.

We're pastors.

What are you talking about?" And then she's like, "You just wanna fuck other girls." I'm like, "No, babe, I swear.

Interesting.

To wit.

[laughing] Um, whenever I have the, the privilege of getting somebody-- buying somebody a copy of the book Alcoholics Anonymous, I always go to page one hundred and eighty.

Oh, my God.

And because in this is...

It's in Dr. Bob's Nightmare.

And whenever I have the privilege of, of, of talking to somebody, I say, "Read Dr. Bob's Nightmare.

Pay really close attention to the last few pages, 'cause you'll know why it is that we're all excited to see you." And, uh, in fact, when I, when I work with alcoholics now, we read Dr.

[laughing]

He was detained early one morning around 1:00 a.m., and within an hour of sitting alone in his cell, the reality of his situation began to sink in.

My cell was kind of the last one on the hall.

There was nobody across from me.

There was nobody to my right.

There was just one person off to my left.

And I pretty much thought that my life as I knew it was gonna be over, and I had decided that the world would be better off without me in it, and I had made a plan to end my life.

I was sobbing, emotional, but resolute.

[laughs]

But over time, I thought about it, and I thought, "You know what? I want to do something that's gonna be meaningfully impacting my community.

I wanna be able to do something, and this is my opportunity." And so I ended up applying.

I was not at all confident I was going to get in.

I got an interview.

I got accepted, and from there, my activism journey has just kind of spiraled more and more.

I mean, I've, I've learned so much over the course of working with It Gets Better.

Yeah.

[laughs]

Yeah.

And like, a- a- and then once, yeah, yeah.

So like i- i- it maybe was always wired in me, maybe it come out we- with a few, with a combination of things and, and, you know, we had w- during our past, like we've always kind of been, we were in and out of a relationship a couple times, so she had been with other guys and I had, and, and I had been with other women.

Like we had kind of found each other again after college and reconvened.

And so I don't know, just wanting to like be present in that experience with her, with like a bigger guy or just wanting to fulfill some sexual desires that she might have.

Like I wanted to bring some of those fantasies out of her too because like we had a good enough solid connection, solid marriage relationship that I feel like we could be more open with each other than what we were at the time.

Okay.

Was that a girl that you met in school, in college? Like, how old were you your first attempt?

Well, the first ti- uh, attempt, actually, she, um, she didn't let me penetrate.

Once she saw it, she said she was just...

She's like, "Actually, let me just suck it." And then later she told me, she's like...

She asked me if that was as big as it got, and I'm like, "Yeah, why?" And she's like, "Your penis is really, really small."

Like, what exactly went down?

Um, well, when I got there, uh, they, uh, they got ready, and they had me turn around while they got ready, and then they told me to turn around, and they just got right into it.

Um, oh, and then she, yeah, put me into chastity and, um, humiliated me the whole time while, uh, she was pleasuring him.

Right.

And, you know, he's asking, he's like, "So what am I gonna call your slut wife?" You know, "What do I call her?" and stuff.

And again, he's kinda talking out loud, and there's other people there, and I'm kinda looking around and kind of getting all embarrassed a little bit.

But at the same time, I'm, like, really hot and, and getting horny for this too.

So we walk to the elevator.

We get in the elevator.

It goes up, and, you know, I have a nice conversation with him saying, you know, "If for, uh, whatever reason she's feeling uncomfortable, would you be okay with, you know, stopping?" He's like, "Absolutely.

Keep going.

That wasn't your scene.

Exactly.

And, uh, you know, so I fucking, I start selling coke, and then this kid, crooked cop story, they go, apparently, he goes inside his fucking warehouse, his storage unit on the side of his apartment.

They see that he's fucking-- They look, look inside, and they're like, they're like, um, he, he looks around and there's Christmas lights.

There's shit thrown everywhere in his fucking apartment.

But he's like, "Yo, that's weird," like, "I know my girl wasn't in here.

I haven't been in here.

And, and, um, my parents are immigrants and didn't come with too much to this country, and they raised us and we were ki- we never really went on vacation too much.

Um, we never really ate out.

I related to you on that story about, uh, appetizers.

I didn't really know what appetizers were till I was in my later teens.

But, um, yeah, they were really tight with money.
