Yes, of course I can.

As we've said, this is all about contractual change.

The question an employer will need to ask themselves from the 1st of January 2027 is whether any proposed changes to pension benefits and pension schemes amount to a variation of a contractual term or condition of employment.

So commonly pension changes can take the form of closing a scheme to future benefit accrual or perhaps amending the benefit structure, whether that's defined benefit or defined contribution schemes.

And often those changes to the benefit structure can be a detrimental change to employees.

So if employees have a contractual entitlement to membership of a particular pension scheme or to a particular level of benefits under that scheme, then a contractual variation will usually be required to make such changes.
